Driveshaft replacement

Postby MattDon » Wed 18.03.2009, 21:11

I need to remove my driveshafts and after a little search i saw a post by johnbenk about an easier method that the manual, can anyone shed some light onto this for me. Id contact john but it says he hasnt been online for some time.

Also id like to remove the jackshaft bearing so i can have it cross referenced (or atleast specified by a bearing specialist) will this be much of an issue, as id realy like to swap the driveshafts from the brg to loki asap.

thanks in advance.

Simple to remove,
jack up
wheel off
wheel centre out
wheel on
lower car
undo/crack hub nut
jack up
undo jack shaft bolts on gearbox
remove coil over
remove raft assy complete with wishbones and hub, leave caliper connected
slide out drive shaft assy
split shaft on work bench

how does one get access to the jackshaft nuts on the gearbox, same question goes for the nearside as i cant even see those nuts. do i need to remove the subframe?

Im also struggeling to get the exhaust off by myself, ive got the clips off and the front rubber mount off im just struggling to pull it apart.

There's no nuts on the gearbox side...

There's only one jack shaft... right hand side

The nuts are on the O/S....Outboard of the Rear of the engine

The only thing that holds the drive shafts in place is a retaining circlip at one end and a nut at the other...

It's 50/50 wether you remove the Pongeron...

If you do it's a dam sight easier to get the exhaust out... and if you drop the rear suspension you can remove the whole exhaust in a onner...

Just clicked I posted two pics the same...

I'll PM you shortly

The easy side is the right hand... That just slides out as a complete assembly

The left is harder, you have to pop that circlip... and it's a bugger..

Not always - use firm pressure and 2 levers, with a sudden 'jolt' with your hands (not with a hammer!), and out it pops.

Just in case you haven't found out yet, the easiest way to get to the jackshaft bearing bolts is by lying under the front of the car - you can see them and reach them quite easily - you will need a 14mm spanner to undo them.

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

ive got the two nuts off, they were on REALY tight, had to use my trusty sissor jack to get enough leverage on the spanner. i do have one last nut to undo before i can remove the hub and thats the one thats tucked underneith i cant find my 18mm spanner :?

Ive not seen the circlips yet, but im taking a short break then im going to have a go with a clear head.

Have you split the ball-joints?

In the first pic of your post above from 21 Mar 2009 at 16:52 which begins "im trying to remove both driveshafts" you can see the upper ball-joint and the track rod end one (there are 3 ball-joints: upper, lower, and one on the track rod end which joins the steering rack to the hub).
Removing the nuts is not enough. The ball-joints need splitting. And for that you need a ball-joint splitter. This can be either a forked wedge type which you just belt into the gap (often destroying the joint's rubber boot in the process), or a scissor type which you attach and screw to lever the joint apart.
Typing "ball joint splitter" into eBay will show you what they look like, and you should be able to find pics of the ball joint itself on this site. They have long been a subject of discussion as we've never quite been able to find a cross-reference. Someone recently found that BMW E30 ones are similar but not the same, and have compared them.

The ball joints are held in the hub carrier on a taper, items 11 and 60 in the picture and the track rod end is held in a similar fashion.

Several ways to split them, ball joint splitter of which there are two types but the only one I think you could get in is like this

problem is they usually mess up the boot

An alternative is to clout the part that carries the taper with a hammer, better if you can place another hammer the other side the shock is usually enough to release the shaft from the taper.
