Is my clutch cable going?

My clutch engagement point has recently moved closer to the firewall, and I need to depress the pedal hard to fully release the clutch. In addition, the pedal is squishy/sloppy at the top of travel, and doesn't return to its correct rest position. Clutch engagement is fine. Seems like a stretched/fraying clutch cable to me, could it be something else? And how difficult is it to replace?

Did you try to adjust the cable?
You can do this @ the engine end of the cable. The clutchcable hooks up to the clutch lever with an adjuster...

Was going to try today. I don't have a very good spot to work on cars at the moment.

Pop the bonnet and reach in with the correct spanner (22?)
No space needed and done in 2 minutes

That's easy to get to, I thought it was underneath. And to answer my own question, yes, the plastic thread has separated from the cable jacket.

I bet your workspace is better than the muddy gravel layby i ended up changing mine in a few weeks ago (stuck just outside Hereford and getting dark!)
