No Reverse but gear cables look fine

Postby BigErch » Mon 23.06.2014, 21:21

Hi, more gear selection woes!
I had lots of problems 2 years ago with my gear cables but fixed them with a bracket on the gear stick end. Since then it's been fine.
Recently I haven't been able to select reverse gear. I thought it was the cables again but I've just checked both ends and it all looks good.
I've tried going from 4 to reverse but with no luck.
Could the gearbox be at fault? What els could I try?
cheers Arch

Can you select reverse by shifting the selectors on the box, that should indicate if it is the box or the cable adjustment

5th is crossgate bellcrank all the way to the LEFT when looking at the shifter on the gearbox from the engine bay and fore-aft all the way to the RIGHT

Best to disconnect the cables. I just had this picture from another project.

It's hard to get a decent picture...

Thanks for the photo and description.
I'm gonna get my wife to sit in the car and go thru the gears. Hopefully I might see what the problem is.

FFS Archie - don't let Justine sit in the drivers seat. She might just want to drive it when you get your gears sorted

PS Are you going down to Goodwood Festival of Speed this coming w/e ? Assuming you get your reverse gear back

I'm not sure if this will help, but I've always had problems with reverse on my original Elan.
It's always been as though it runs out of travel and doesn't quite locate in gear properly, then pings out when you start to put some load on it.
Going from 5th to reverse helps slightly, as the "journey" gets up a bit of momentum, but it's still not ideal.
I replaced the original cables with AB ones (it had an AB short-shift kit already fitted), but it didn't improve it in the slightest.
Neither did changing the short-shift selector box for a standard one.

The new Elan is much better, but even that sometimes (actually quite often) doesn't go in first time. However at least that one never jumps out of gear again, whereas the original one consistently does.
Striking fear into the hearts of duplicate posts everywhere...! :P

I don't believe it's synced, so the behavior you have now is normal

The cables are definitely fine as I took them all the way out tonight.

I can select all the forward gears using the crossgate and fore/aft levers. When the crossgate is far left the fore aft will not go past the middle position. Far right is not accessible!
Anyone have any ideas? Could the leavers be at fault or the gearbox?

Just for a test, remove the reverse light switch. Maybe it has seized and the activation lever won't go any further.

I'm checking out the workshop manuals and the car but can't see a switch.

It is possible something broke inside the selector (shift) housing or the gearbox, but the switch would prevent getting into rev if it locked up.

I removed the reverse switch but it's made no difference.
What should i expect if i open up the selector housing - a world of hurt? :bonk:

The selector housing isn't really complicated but I don't see where it could be causing the problem.

Maybe the roll-pin has backed out or something. It would be wise to check that next regardless since you can pull it by removing the clutch cable bracket and pulling the 4 bolts. It will pop off with a little lifting help at the fore-aft lever. If someone has been in there already and glued it back together, then be careful that you don't break or bend anything. You might have to use a thin scraper to get a corner to lift.

make sure when you are trying to select reverse at the box you are not going from 5th to reverse as there is an inhibitor to stop you doing that.

I'll check again as there are no cables on the levers right now and I'm moving them by hand. Cheers Andy
