Gear lever free play

Seeing a gear lever assy on eBay has reminded me that I seem to have some excessive free play in the ball joint on my lever, I could try replacing it with this one on eBay but there is no guarantee that this will be better than the one I have.

Does anyone know if this unit, or the component parts are unique to the M100 or are there any other cars from which it was 'borrowed'?

Of course, I don't know if the free play is really excessive as I haven't investigated any others but it seemed so when I replaced my gear cables. And again, if there is wear then I font know if this is to the ball joint or the socket or both. Any thoughts?

This probably doesn't help one iota, but I had a very sloppy gear-lever, until I fitted BCN's cables and short shift. All the sloppiness disappeared, the change is now very precise, short and a delight.

So it may not be the ball itself, but the linkage, cables and cranks. Presume you fitted the standard Lotus cables?

I had a nightmare exchanging the cables, with a set of Bobs, er, I think the expression is 'pre-loved'! BCN was very supportive and the experience I had is detailed on a thread here somewhere, I ended up having to get a new Felstead cable delivered!

So, no, I don't have the short Shift kit but, yes, I do have the Stainless cables and I am content with the change it was just that I felt the linkage was all loose and, perhaps, worn when I had it all out of the car for inspection & fit. Maybe not.

I'll maybe have a play with someone else's shift when opportunity next presents.
