S2 gear cables

Postby besidethewye » Mon 29.06.2015, 11:16

At last the Elan has let me down - en route to Scotland - floppy gear lever and stuck in second (which did enable me to get off the roundabout at least).

Looks like new cables needed. I've had a search around but am not 100% sure on what is available and what the recommendations would be. A bit disappointed that the car was just back from a service - suspect that the gear cables did not get looked at for some time.

Any advice on best approach and sources for replacements much appreciated.

Speak/pm John (Brit car nut). He is now the guru making replacement cables.

:agree:
BCN cables will be cheaper, stronger & slicker than OEM ones.

Service schedules & MOTs don't cover everything so I would not expect this to be noticed.

:agree: with the above :D
Would add get the Short Shift Kit at the same time, tremendous improvement in shift quality.

Thanks for the advice.

What's entailed in the short shift kit? Would be nice to have a quicker gear shift - perhaps the fact that I instinctively went slowly through the changes should have told me the cables weren't great but I assumed it was a built in characteristic due to the front drive.

Same cables + some additions or is it different cables to start?

If you get the cables and SSK together BCN supplies slightly different rod ends and abutment brackets.
The shift isn't necessarily quicker, just more precise and "shorter", it feels like a modern car instead of the porridge stirrer we are all use to.
For the extra cost involved while you are doing the cables I think it is well worth it.

:agree:

Get both the cables and the short shift from BCN. They work very well together and his cables are a huge improvement over std cables. The short shift has 3 different settings and you can choose when assembling how short you want it: I set mine in in the middle and am delighted with the resultant gear changing. Price is good compared to std cables too.

Thoroughly recommend this mod.
