reverse selection

Hi I have 95 S2 that I am just about getting to know. It seems very easy to change from fifth and go into reverse unless care is taken . There seems to be very little resistance , is that normal or can I improve it > I ask because my wife is going to start driving the car (she normally drives an auto) .

No, that's not normal, if not impossible. When shifting down a gear or two, drop it to the neutral position momentarily then select 4th or 3rd. I suspect you haven't got used to the gearbox yet and you are trying to force things ?

You don't by any chance have a "short shift kit" fitted do you?

I find if you "palm" the gearstick with your left hand rather than grab it with a fist you will find it is naturally sprung/selected towards neutral and 3/4 gears.

As its an S2 you would have the upgraded shift cables but that's not to say they are correctly adjusted or that an adjuster nut hasn't come loose. in neutral the shifter should have a spring resistance against the 1-2 side and the 5-R side so that it sits in the middle. where does your shifter/gear lever sit in neutral?, it should be 5 degrees forward and 10 degrees right from perfectly centre and vertical, though many prefer it to be vertical.
