Flick o' the Wrist

Postby Sy V » Sat 02.06.2007, 16:27

I've put my new Tap & Dye set (bought at Donington this year) to good use again this morning.
Ever since I put an aftermarket gear knob in, it would (after time) work loose. Probably because it never matched the OEM thread of the gearstick and I was just filling the knob with various sticky compounds to make do.

Well, I was out having a blast today and my knob got really loose and floppy so I headed for home (changing gears using the shaft as opposed to the knob end (leave it)) and tackled the job in earnest.

Here's are the afore-mentioned T&Ds:

Eager to keep my after market knob, I decided to take a chance and saw off the OEM threaded end of the gearstick - the threaded area is about 25mm (1") long and has a thread that I think is M12x1.25. I then used the taps and dyes to re-cut the threads inside the knob and cut a new section of thread on the shortened gearstick (both M12x1.5).

Having reassembled the gaiter and knob I thought it might be interesting to measure my thrust length (fore and aft movement):

I'm left with only 74 mm (3"), but don't feel sorry for me as it looks rather dandy and works a treat:

Hey Sy, really cunning use of the old %26 in place of the ampersand! Nice one.

Couldn't help noticing that you and Benky (BTW what did happen to his avatar?) have the same ideas about detailing.....

[quote="Sy V"] my knob got really loose and floppy[quote]

Don't worry Sy - it's an age related thing. A tab of Levitra or Viagra and you'll be all stiff again. All those double entendres in your post will have Stef knocking on your door

Stef read Pm's? Thats like asking Nissias to read threads prior to spending several hundred pounds on upgrades :?

By the way, I had my length shortened by 25mm. It seems better suited and compliments the short shift kit.
