1992 J-Reg Elan - not currently roadworthy

Postby JonLake » Wed 04.01.2023, 00:52

I have been having financial problems for a while, and so my lovely Pacific Blue Elan SE is sitting mouldering away on my drive, in a shocking state - mouldy interior, slight damage (2" square) to passenger door. Flat battery, hasn't turned a wheel for years.

It comes with four spare OZ alloys, a second hand roof and two extra seats, plus various bits and bobs.

Does anyone fancy a major restoration project?

Offers gladly accepted, I can post photos from Friday.

Hi Jon,

Sorry to hear that your financial situation is driving this sale, and I hope that you mentioning it doesn't encourage any 'low-ball' offers.

Whilst it is always hard to give an honest idea of value without seeing a particular car, there are many on here who would be able to give an idea of it's worth.

Obviously, pictures can help, but if it has been sitting for a while, they may show it in a worse condition that it actually is (or not?). If you let us know your location, maybe someone nearby would be prepared to have a look and give some honest feedback...... otherwise, it is likely that you will get an offer or 2 from someone who will turn up with a trailer, take it away, leave you a wad of cash, and you'll have no hassle at all - but maybe not the right amount of cash (but such is a free-market economy).

At the moment, there is nowt to even base a first guess on (other than a crystal ball) - I'm sure that people will be interested in it (there is always someone that will take on a project - I personally hate to see a viable car sold for spares) - it is all down to how quickly you need to get shot of it, and what offers get made.
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

I'm sure Muley would have been interested but he's just flown to NZ for a few months.

Thanks Dave, Thanks Rambo. I had entirely forgotten what a lovely bunch of people inhabit LEC. (Maybe it's because no-one realises that I'm the nasty piece of work who used to post as Jackonicko?).

I'm in Henley On Thames (I'm happy to give an address and postcode to anyone who wants to take a gander at the old jalopy). Once my partner has finished moving her stuff out I'll take some pictures.

Like you, Dave, I absolutely hate to see a viable Elan sold for spares, and I'd entertain a lower offer from someone who plans to restore the car to her former glory.

She's low mileage, original but for the upgraded brakes, and cables, stainless rear 'bones (think I may have a set of those in the shed, too), and has air con and the proper rear lights.

IIRC I still have a spare washer bottle, a couple of air con compressors, etc.

Jon, I was aware of your previous username on here, and considered sending a message to see if you wished to have this post under your old name, so people would know some history...... but then I searched and your old account appears to no longer be in existence ....... anyway, now that you have 'outed' yourself, I am able to say that I remember the car of old, and even after the unfortunate events of old, we spoke at Castle Combe and the car looked good at that time.

I really am sorry to hear that you are still having woes in "real life", and that you manage to get a suitable outcome to the car situation.

Thanks Dave.

If anyone I remember from the old days wants the beast, they will find me extra amenable to a sensible offer!

May I wish all fellow Elan enthusiasts belated seasons greetings, very best wishes for a happy and prosperous 2023, happy driving (the last tinged with envy) and the earnest hope that you all avoid upsetting those dear to you, or mismanaging your career in the way I've done!

 I thought I recognised your sign on name but hadn't associated it with Jackonicko. Or Exigexxx?

Welcome back, if only temporarily.

your not helping yourself much with value-ing your car.

i may be interested. although when it comes to projects. i know for a fact this one would be in the driveway 3 years before I will have the garage free for it.

one of the major questions for me would be if it need a respray ?

a list of what else you expect it to need in order to go back on the road could be helpful to any potential buyers.

It would need a partial respray - the damaged area on the pax door for starters, and maybe some lacquer peeling on the spoiler. The interior needs a bit of attention - probably best with new seats and carpets. The new roof looks to have reasonable seals.

Everything would need a lot of freeing up - brakes, cables, wastegate, etc.

The tyres would need replacing, though the spare may still be OK.

When parked she was a good runner with no niggles.

I'm not looking to rip anyone off, and anyone is welcome to come and look and report back.

Interesting...I couldn't make it work off your imgur link either, but then I uploaded it to my Postimage account and it seems to post correctly. No idea why ...

I played a bit more. Looks like it just wanted the addresses to have a .jpg suffix...so I typed it in.

Well, the above pictures show the car off in far worse state than it deserves - credit to Jon for making no attempt to 'hide' the (small) faults. Yes, it's a project, and you can follow the slow progress towards immortality here

think you're being a bit hard on yourself there - some of us appreciated your informed (if sometimes a little direct) contribution.

vaporised by previous "management" who were rather less measured than your good self Dave.

Anyway leaving the sleeping dogs be, it's good to hear from you Jon and I hope you get your situation sorted.
