First M100 sent to US at LOG X Black for sale, $18,000

Postby Dave S M100 » Tue 30.05.2017, 17:42

This car was the first Elan M100 brought into the US and presented at LOG X in October of 1990, it is one of only 6 Black cars brought to the US, Doc Bundy is shown in the car at LOG X. A special test engine was installed and the car was tested to meet and prove handling, reason for high mileage. It was kept by Lotus Cars USA (LCU) and became Doc Bundy’s (Team driver for Lotus) car when he raced for Lotus, Doc has also signed the dash. I purchased the car from LCU in 1997 with 109,000 miles and am the original owner. A full restoration has been done of the interior including new carpets and seats, new suspension shocks and springs and bearings, soft top (original was tan) and fully disassembled and repainted, etc. Spent over $9500 in new parts. The original engine with VIN matching number was also included, I rebuild it and replaced the test engine at 117,000 miles to keep the car original, it now has 133,301 miles on it. I have pictures of the restoration and purchase records of many of the parts replaced.
This is a one of a kind car with a lot of history and will always be special.

For anyone that has an M100 in the USA, they know of http://www.Lotusm100parts.com. The car's seller IS Dave Schmid, Lotusm100parts.com.

He has had a close association with Lotus US for many years and has been able to acquire many items from Lotus USA in Georgia before they moved to Michigan.

Dave was also the owner of IB.2 that was a right hand model that he raced for quite a while back in the day.

Dave was very serious about keeping his black car as original as possible and has replaced any parts he could get from Lotus to keep it in really nice condition.

If you are looking for an M100 in the US South East, it is worth a trip to see it and give it some thought.

Dave has a letter from the President of Lotus Cars USA confirming the history of this car.

Anyone trying to reach Dave via his PM, but not being successful can contact me and I will help you get in touch with him. The LEC program is causing him problems trying to get his email address changed since he has a new one and his old one is very much dead.

I hope someone grabs another piece of Lotus History.

He should have brought this to LOG37 last month. It would have been a real hit! Would like to see more pictures of this, especially the interior and Doc Bundy signature. GLWTS

Ted, thanks for your kind words. I was at LOG 37, but just on Saturday for the Concour, I wanted to bring it, but with all the rain predicted I didn't want to drive it there. I also have it posted on Classic Autotrader https://classics.autotrader.com/classic ... /100873582 and there are many pictures, if you are interested in buying it I can send you more pics.

Thanks, Dave

Wow, interesting car indeed! Most visually striking is, it wears a UK/ROW tail section, where the wing wraps around. The prongeron is also different from production cars. A healthy bit of history in this one!

Also, there is an opening in the center "grill" - maybe for a towhook? Very interesting...

I have seen the car several times, but always in Dave's garage and never crawled around under it. I am not sure it doesn't have a vertical radiator mounting like the UK/ROW cars instead of the sloped FED design, so a tow hook would be possible. I expect that I will be over to visit Dave in the next few weeks or so and I will try to look at it more closely.

Another anomaly - a round control to the right of the three switches on the center stack below the stereo...

Don,

That is actually a second cigarette lighter, Doc Bundy had it installed to plug in his large phone they had back in those days, the phone was mounted on the right side of the center counsel.

Don,

The grill does have an opening for a tow hook, but the framework doesn't have the hook, the radiator is the sloped FED version, I had replaced the radiator when I restored the car.

Dave, Saw your advert in ReMarque. I've been an Elan owner since 1965. Bought the new Elan Coupe at the Oct Earl Court show. bought an M100 Elan in 2008, wife loved it except for the color, Red. Sold it along with the "66 Coupe in 2015 prior to moving to southern Florida. Now have a GTS (TTR) but no fun in south Florida. Thinking of selling it. Wife again doesn't relish trips in it. She loved the M100 except for the color. Is your car still available? Have to keep her happy & the M100 would be perfect for here & for trips, like to LOG in Cleveland next year. Drop me a line if still available. Ron Irwin

What is the "spark plug" doing under the front end off the exhaust down pipe near the cat??? Never saw that before...

Ted,

Good question, the Converter Manifold has some extra ports for sensors (It is required for Japan to check Exhaust Gas Temperature).

It had a spark plug in it when I got it from Lotus, so I thought I'd just keep it in there instead of replacing it with a pipe plug, keeping it original! Use the plug for a plug.

Thanks, Dave
