Thanks. I was worried that I set the carrot too high, but it looks like I set it about right.

BTW I'll mark this sold when I've got the final payment.

They finally picked up the car Friday; a flatbed which makes the loop from Winnepeg to Florida approx. every 3 weeks.

The missing front tooth of the Canadian driver supposed to be an indication of government controlled healthcare?

Anywho, I miss driving the car already. I need to set the base timing on the yellow car. I had the white car running really s-m-o-o-t-h. It makes the yellow car seem industrial (and less powerful) in comparison.

Particular areas of the brain perform distinct functions. If the area controlling sight is damaged (just for 1 example), unused neurons in other portions of the brain are unable to form synapses with the optic nerves which go to your eyes.

Ug. Of course when I'm on a 2-year austerity regimen I have to be tempted by what seems like the perfect TR8. I've watched TR8 sales for a few years now and this particular non-molested, non-rusty, low-mileage 1981 example; meaning FI (not carbs), better gearing, and only 416 made VS 2375 1980 examples... is the closest to being "my" perfect TR8 I've seen in all that time. I wonder if the economy is making especially fine cars come up for sale? In other words, is this something I won't have the chance to buy again? Doesn't it counter logic to believe that low-mileage, "near-new" examples of old cars will survive year after year?

I bid $8k on the car last night when it was at $7399, partly because I just knew $8k wouldn't buy the car... which turned out to be right, thank God! Here are the other parts I'd "have" to buy if I go crazy and purchase this car. Please don't tell me what it adds up to!
Code: Select all
Morspeedperformance
$475.00 Front bumper/valance
$375.00 Rear  bumper

WedgeParts - Clarksville, Tennessee
$249.99  Porsche Boxster radiator fan (2)
$ 16.45  sensor,radiator TR8 86/76oC

The Wedge Shop - Massachusetts
$525.00  Aluminum Radiator
$360.00  Headers, ceramic-coated
$755.00  Wilwood 4-pot, 10 1/8 x 1 vented rotors
         (requires minimum of 14" rims)
$215.00  Aluminum pulleys for water-pump & PAS
$499.00  Strut Brace
$ 16.00  manifold air bleed nipple (cooling-system)
$275.00  GM 100amp alternator, aluminum Bracket, belt
$185.00  Upgraded springs, lower by 1"
$ 35.00  ball-bearing upper strut mount

GB Car Parts
$499.95  14x6" Minator Wheels 4x3.75" (95.25mm) 22mm offset
         (14" or larger wheels required for brake upgrade)

Rimmer Brothers
£163.91 FRONT SPAX INSERT, pair (on-car ADJ) GSA2024SPAXTA2
£ 98.61 REAR SPAX SHOCK ABSORBER, pair (on-car ADJ)

Here are pictures of what the Morspeedperformance front bumper/valance & rear bumper look like. I am not making the change for the looks, but for the weight reduction & where the reduction takes place, at the outermost, outside the wheelbase, most pendulous parts of the car. I'd shed 50lbs both front & rear. That's a hundred pounds, bub! I drove my last TR8 that way when I dressed it down (removed the bumpers) and drove it to the paint shop. That drive to the paint shop was a hoot. Not only did it accelerate faster but the front stopped rebounding because it never compressed as much going over bumps. In other words, the car handled much better.

Compare this Ferrai F355's grille to the following TR8 image. It looks like a copy right down to the driving lights.

Now I dun went & bid the car up to $9000! I've computed it will cost me $1515 to convert the golden-tan-plaid interior to a biscuit-leather interior (door panels, knee pads, shifter boot, handbrake boot, console lid, seats, rear panel, shelf carpet, floor carpet).

BTW I want my Knighthood for being such a tireless contributer to the Queen's coffers. Two English cars owned 1990-1998. Three English cars owned 2003-2009. Australian car owned in 2002-2003 & again in 2006-2008. I especially donated in the 90-98 time frame. Quinton Hazel, Borg & Beck, BL, Unipart, Lucas, Austin-Rover, Rover, Smiths, and countless other "down-home" companies had their parts boxes opened in my garage.

This thread used to be titled "Nitroman's 31k White - Trade for pristine Triumph TR-8" before I changed it to SOLD. That is what appeared in my search, and it's why I added the last two posts... before I realized the thread no longer referenced TR8!

Good luck on the auction - looks like it'll cost you more than $9k to take the car home... I remember looking into the 7/8 wedges before buying a 1963 Rambler American convertible back in 1998.... I just love small convertibles.

You're supposed to slap some sense into me & talk me out of spending my money at such an impractical time in my life.

I don't really like the aftermarket F&R pieces. I'd prefer to just paint the F&R bumpers body color, but I'd have to still eliminate the awful weight penalty they extract from the car. I wonder how much of the weight is in the steel-monobloc-monolith underneath the rubber cover (which is no lightweight in itself!). If I cut big circular holes to "swiss-cheese" that lump of metal it might cut out half the weight, perhaps even slightly more. I'll give that a try B4 spending another $900 on parts which I think detract from the wedgy line of the car.

Look at page 1 then read story on page 5: http://www.wlsservices.com/tcnf/nl2005/v17i12.pdf

That's my old TR8, now with some really awful wheels on it, still with the same family I sold it to. That A/C idler pulley was the biggest design flaw of the car. I went though 3 or 4 of them during the time I owned the car. The bearing would not stay seated in the aluminum housing. Aluminum is just too soft a metal to put that kind of sideways load on. When the bearing finally pulled loose, it ejected downward to the pavement; along with the shaft on the inside of the bearing, and the drive belt pulley on the end of the shaft. Good to see they've come up with a fix for that... NOT!

The part is not cheap, since it consists of an aluminum piece which bolts to the engine block, the bearing pressed into it, the shaft pressed into the bearing, and a pulley pressed onto the other end of the shaft! If they'd just make that first bit out of iron instead of aluminum, the bearing would not gradually work its way loose.

Since you're buying all those other parts, just take the aluminum piece to a shop and have it recreated in steel or iron. :smt044

Now there are two 1981 fuelies!

Again we have TPVDV8BT402016 (note USA improper 14-character VIN#. CarFax won't even accept the VIN! Good going Triumph), one of only 25 1981 model-year TR7/8s built at Canley (Coventry). Funny that they actually TRIED to do the proper thing & put VIN#s on the cars, but got it wrong!!! Moreso, these 25 1981 model-year cars were built in June 1980. This factory was closed when 1980 model-year production ended in August 1980. For the 25 June "1981" cars they simply took California-spec 1980 vehicles, since those had Fuel-Injection (like 1981 Federal Triumphs needed to meet emmisions regulations) & fitted the 1981 exterior-changes to them, a different front-badge & a different boot-lock. The only 1981 mechanical part they may have received (sources conflict) was a lower 1981 5th gear ratio. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 0336727297

And a new Ebay offering, SATPZ458XBA406416, built at Solihull as all of the 1981 cars were supposed to be, with a legally proper 17-character VIN#. Solihull didn't start 1981 MY production until September of 1980. Records indicate this car is the 10th to last TR8 manufactured. Look at the interior differences between this "true" 1981 and the faux-1981 above, and you'll see how easy it is to spot an '81 wannabe. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 0394586853
