E petition - Saving Motor Sport

Postby a5gcd » Tue 30.12.2014, 12:53

The following link to the E-petition was passed on to me by an MSA contact

http://www.britcar24hr.co.uk/home/hm-go ... nt-waiver/

This was, of course, exactly what killed Brooklands!
Lots of wealthy types, completely uninterested in the world's first purpose-built racing circuit, (which had been built decades earlier in open countryside, well away from any problems), decided to have their expensive executive homes built in the outskirts of London - but then objected to the noise, and had the racing restricted (hence the end of the 24hr events). Then, admittedly helped by Vickers' wartime factory, etc, ensured that the circuit was never re-opened after WWII. Since then it's been in-filled by many many more residential properties and hence the now long accepted reality that Brooklands will never again be a race circuit or an aerodrome.

It's no different to townies moving in to rural villages, at great expense and to the detriment of the next generation of much less wealthy locals, and then loudly objecting to being woken up by cockerels and the church bells....

Let's try to reintroduce some long lost common sense, by law if necessary.

Pass it on to anyone that you think will be interested.

Likewise. Same applies to any existing facility that you choose to go and live near to, not just motor racing circuits.

Signed.

Like the people who move to Hounslow then complain about the noise from overhead aircraft.
Idiots. Heathrow has been there for years, is a huge source of work & easily justifies improvements to local transport.

Speedway is another sport which has suffered noise complaints. They even get bogus ones on evenings where meetings were cancelled due to bad weather. Many of the tracks which have suffered are in the middle of nowhere too.

As much as I miss the old scream of NAs, I hope the current engines are here to stay. They are exactly the type of technology which F1 should be developing for future use in road vehicles.
& they have brought unreliability back into the sport. F1 cars have been far too robust in the last few years. CC would not have approved.

I've been having a bit of a catch-up of unread threads, and only just spotted this one.

So I've added my signature as there are only 5 days to go til it closes. Unfortunately it's not much over the 40,000 mark whereas it needs to exceed 100,000. If you're a member of any other forums it might be worth spreading the link.

My manager tells me that here at Rolls-Royce we did something even dafter: sold the land opposite the site at Hucknall for housing development, then had to shut down the engine test beds after the residents of the new houses complained about the noise! And now guess what? Headcount reduction!

Similar arse-about-face situation at Filton. BAe applied to use the runway (extended for the Brabazon, which involved flattening the village of Charlton, and Concorde) as a low volume airport. The good folk of Bradley Stoke (aka Sadly Broke due to the downturn of house prices in the 90s) objected and it was not passed. The runway was shut a couple of years ago and the land has been sold off for housing: except on top of the runway which is a bit more robust than they anticipated so it is not economically viable to dig it up.

The biggest loss is the Rolls Spitfire but at least the runway is having the last laugh.

Ah yes, good old Bradley Stoke - it reminds me very much of Clifton in Nottingham, which I've heard is the biggest council estate in Europe. Anyway it's a dump, especially at the moment with the widening of the A453 between J24 of the M1 and Nottingham. Bloody place looks like Beirut, and as for the scruffy little urchins who inhabit it, I'm fearful of the Elan's safety whenever I have to leave it parked there. Unfortunately that's where my girlfriend lives, so sometimes I don't have a choice but to risk it.

Now on the other hand Clifton in Bristol seems rather nice, what with the suspension bridge, pleasant views and desireable houses etc.

Another coincidence is that we now seem to have inherited the R-R Spitfire from you - it's in a hangar at East MIdlands Airport (which you use the A453 to get straight to).

Well, mostly it's in the hangar. Sometimes it's in the runway and delaying passengers...
