Norfolk Meet - Bird in Hand - 3rd Monday of the Month

Postby theelanman » Tue 19.05.2015, 08:39

The Bird in Hand
Church Road
Norwich,
Norfolk
NR16 1BJ

3rd Monday of the Month

7.00pm

Gents time to resurrect a Norfolk meet.
New day and new venue.
We have been very kindly been offered the use of the function room on the 3rd monday of the month at the recently improved Bird in Hand.
I understand some of you from suffolk area will find this venue harder to reach but having a Norfolk Lotus groups meeting so close to the factory really is the obvious choice. Links with Lotus are many...from the Lotus themed displays to the many workers who pop in for a pint.
Anyway as the evening are brighter a decent Lotus turn out on the car park would be good!

I am aware of some possible discontent within the CL line up.....and my local CL didnt want to know anyone who owned a car that got past about 1966

this meeting is sort of LEC/TLF/LEF...amongst others......

the pub is also full of Lotus memorabilia....and a big carpark :-D

Not a case of 'the more, the merrier' then. Think I know what you mean about CL - I had Scimitar GTE's from 74 to 86 in Herts, then Suffolk, until I got the Eclat, when in Suffolk.

Reliant Sabre & Scimitar Owners Club (RSSOC) was fairly active in Herts and Suffolk but particularly so in Essex, and most owners were doing all their own maintenance and tuning. Pub meets were all about fixing problems and lending tools, but Essex also had car rallies/treasure hunts, trips to Essex Police HQ to have training on the skidpan, visits to Brian Hart, who at the time was a Ford Tuning Specialist and sold re-profiled cams and modified head for the Essex V6 and all good fun.

Bit of a shock when I got the Eclat and joined Club Lotus and found my first South Suffolk/North Essex pub meet talk was dominated by how much Mick Miller was charging to rebuild this or fix that on Elans or Elan Plus 2's and a couple of Turbo Esprit drivers who'd actually arrived in their cars considered themselves a class above everybody - and a person who worked on his own car must be just an oil-rag. A member organised a pub meet in Stowupland that ran for quite a while with more sociable owners turning up ,some with oily fingernails... but numbers slowly reduced and it stopped during a nasty winter period and never got going again as far as I know.

Shortly after I got my first SE in 95 my village pub (when we had one) got visited by East Anglian Lotus Drivers who parked a good cross section of models in the car park so I had a beer with them and joined for a year. They used to vary the pubs to meet at but now seem to have fixed on Half Moon Inn, Rushall near Diss on 2nd Monday of the month. At least that won't clash. I presume first 3rd Monday will be 15th June for Bird in Hand, Wrennigham...

I'll aim for 7:30 ish too then. Only 42 miles but most is on A140 and Suffolk end of A140 has a ridiculous 40mph Limit on it so will take me about an hour...

Definitely.
I'm a free agent and I'll need some food tonight. This morning took my wife & 2 other crazy women to the railway station for them to spend the week walking the second part of the Offa's Dyke Path, Knighton to Prestatyn. They did the first part last year. They're going to spend the week walking 80 miles carrying all they need in their backpacks - Knighton to Prestatyn by road is 90 miles so in a Lotus probably take about 2 hours - I wouldn't even take a toothbrush..

Also spent the weekend fitting a blue S2 hood to my SE so need a test run to check how I'm getting on. Not too happy with the fit on the passenger side top of screen and rear of door window so still fiddling - think I may need the front clips to pull it 'out of square'. Took some time getting my head round how the 2 horizontal bolts and 1 vertical adjuster bolts were working... but I'm climbing the learning curve.... slowly. Didn't expect adjusting the passenger side to change the driver's side so much but it's all about the 'axis of rotation', and would be easier with 2 people -1 to adjust, the other to watch what's happening. Adjust 1/2 a turn, walk round the other side to see what's happened, go back adjust a bit more, find you've overshot - too much walking for me!

Several years ago spent an afternoon in Cumbria with 'Kurching' fitting one of his hardtops to my other (avatar) Elan and he was telling me how much the dimensions of Elans can vary and how 'unsquare' the top of windscreen can be. Mine wasn't too bad but I'll find out with this one when I try to swap the hardtop across... think it might be 'game on'. :smt119

Phil, looks like your hood is almost there, better than many the day they left the factory! Was good to talk to you and hearing about your mini racing days :-)

Was a surprise to see Gareth and his gorgeous car... the shiniest red EVER (someone did ask him if it was metallic paint!)

Food was good, conversation was excellent and great to see Mike Kimberly. Got a great photo of him chatting and casually leaning on my car :-D

Another meet is happening this Monday 19th Sept as it's the 3rd Monday in the month.

Principally a Lotus Forums get together so a few different models occasionally turn up but frequently the LEC M100's out number the rest ...
