type49, new member from Belgium

Postby type49 » Thu 13.04.2017, 16:52

Good evening.
First of all, sorry for my English, it's not perfect but i'll try doing my best. :?

I just wanted to thanks the members of this forum for the help i've found here.
In fact, 20 months ago, i did buy an Elan, and started to do "some works" on it :-D Many times, i found precious informations that helped me a lot for doing the job.
Now, it's nearly achieved, and the car will be back on the roads within a few weeks.

Here is the car.
1992 Elan SE, silver frost, approximately 30000 miles, but a lot of scratches on the bodywork (but no major cracks), due to the previous owner who was not "very carefull" with his car.

So it was time for some cleaning

Than, changing oil (engine and gearbox) and filter, hoses and coolant, water pump, air filter, disc brakes, brake pads and brake fluids, spark plugs, cleaning of the carpets and all the interior, cleaning of the engine bay, reparing front lights and electric windows (that didn't work very well  ), new leather on seats, doors, stearing wheel.... preparing the bodywork for a new paint, refurbishment of the wheels (also scratched)....

Next, the car spend 5 months far from home for painting. Yes it's quite long, but the painter had a lot of work to do and did it very well

Finallly, the car has changed a bit  . And i'm very happy with the result

Thank you once again for all the informations i've found here

Well done type49. Looking good and I don't know any other M100 in Gold Leaf colours

There are a few more M100 owners just across the border from you :burnout:

Don't forget to post some photos of the finished result

I have seen one in the past (at Donington IIRC) Looked pretty good but accentuated the bulk of the rear bumper.

It will be a bit different from the one just above.
The rear bumper is not completely white

I didn't want the rear bumper to be fully white. I think it would have been "too much white" at the rear.

By the same way, i didn't want the wheels in gold color as they are on the elise type 49. I wanted to keep the original wheels and these are "more massive" than the one on the elise. I think it would have added too much gold color on the car, so are they black now as we often see ont the original Elan from the sixties.

004.jpg

this was the "source of inspiration" more than the "type 49 elise"

carpets back on place after some washing.
The first time i washed these, they produced a "kind of brown juice" that looked like coffee  Now, they are back !

inside2.jpg

And some "plastic parts" around the doors and the hood stowage lid have been covered with black leather as they are no more available as new. It's the best solution i've found to erase scratches.

A protective film from paintshield has been placed on front bumper and "hood cover". No picture of that, you would'nt see any difference between after and before
New seal around windscreen and on the side windows too.

seal.JPG

The "plastic part" (don't know thee exact term, sorry) behind the 2 rear view mirrors had been destroyed (crashed between dashboard and door :? ), so i've tried to build some in a piece of aluminium covered with leather. The result is not so bad i think for the price it did cost

here on place with the dooor panel

Some new leather on the center console too with a gold leaf embroidery on the armrest

Added lightness at the expense of safety.... ACBC would be proud!

I painted mine in Silk Cut colours in prep for working on DaveEds car in the same

Decided to go for PCa instead

Project fail

Was going to use the body shape to produce a much wider gold strip tho.

If I can find the model I'll post it.

Nice job so far- good luck with the rest.

And it's not my first English car, i've ever learned a few things with other toys when they broke down

I think they're known as door cheaters or door cheater panels ?? Some of us cover them in carbon fibre stick on film if they get knackered or require a cheap fix and updating

They ARE called Cheater Panels: D100V0058F and D100V0059F. They went obsolete last year but places like SJs have them still available for around 10 quid each.

The "V" shaped seals are still available from a Lotus dealer: A100B0889F (LH) and A100B0890F (RH) for £5.34 and £5.07 respectively. SJs shows stock at those prices.
