It was one of the bolts holding the bottom oil pipe on that snapped. Along with one on the clamping plate which I shouldn't have been trying to undo anyway.

Unfortunately now I've had a good look with the turbo off its going to need refurbing. When holding the compressor shaft theres about 2mm play longitudinally and a little bit side to side as well!!

I'd like to say thank you to Neil as well for putting up with my phone calls seeking advice :-D

Another good day in the garage.

Reasssembled the downpipe, PCE & heatshields and refitted them. It'll probably have to come partially out again when the turbo goes back in however but at least I know where everything is and that everything still fits :-D

Fitted the Piper although not bolted it onto the PCE yet for the same reason as above, managed it suprisingly easily despite not having the car on any ramps and it could have gone easier if I had read the instructions properly rather than just skimming them.

Replaced the CAS O-ring. The O-ring that came out looked in physically good condition however it was a bit baggy as if someone had fitted one that was too big a diameter and not fat enough :? Replaced it with a tighter fatter O-ring which seemed to seal much better.

Now the bad news. Midland Turbo failed to phone me back so I gave them a call, apparently my Turbo is beyond repair and will need replacing  They didn't have a price for this at the moment and said they would phone me back. This did get me thinking however that now would be a good time to fit a better turbo, now I dont know a huge amount on turbo upgrades just what I have read here.

I assume that I would be able to fit a new better turbo leaving everything else standard and be able to run as I am now, then later swap out injectors, map sensor, ecu etc to get more boost!?!

If so what would I need to get now to fit a new turbo? A turbo obviously! Intake pipe? Oil and Coolant feed pipes? Downpipe? Mounting brackets? Err.... :?

Nope, its the one that came out, it actually looks a bit smaller on the picture (probably because of the angle) and was actually around 31mm. It just didn't seem to fit right :?

There was a thread around somewhere with the correct size which I'm sure I'll find in a minute.

Edit: According to this thread Clicky its 23,7mm ID x 3,5mm. That seems to be the size that came out but it was sloppy in mine!?! I'll have to wait and see if it starts pee'ing oil again when shes back up and running.

Pretty sure Gst fitted me a new one of them CAS seals, all be it 3 or 4 yrs ago, remember him saying they were a loose fit, & they smeared some silicone around to stop them leaking. If your after a bigger turbo G, look here, viewtopic.php?f=85&t=12796

Thanks Paul, the seal did look quite new but was very loose and did seem as though it had been leaking, I'll have to see how it goes with the tighter fatter seal.

I'd flicked over that turbo thread as it was an old group buy when I suppose I should have read it from the start, Doh!! The amount of plumbing thats needed for the bigger turbo is offputting if trying to do it myself  maybe a T-bird or other hybrid is in order!?!

Been to collect my turbo back from Midland Turbo today and give somebody else a go as they wanted nearly a grand for a new unit.

Gave Turbo Developments a call and he quoted £530 for the complete refurb, fitting the larger T-bird compressor and machining the compressor housing. Its being picked up on Monday!! :-D

Got the Turbo back today all nice and shiny and new looking and with the bigger T-bird compressor fitted :-D . Not had time to fit it yet although I made a start this evening after picking it up from DHL. With a bit of luck it'll all be back together and running again this weekend. :-D

Hi G UK,
I am pleased to hear that you got the turbo sorted.
This was the way I intended to go-----that was until
Paul offered me his LGM upgrade kit.
It's good to see that the "black beauty" has gone to a
caring home.
Keep up the good work.

I'm surprised a shop in the UK would have a compressor housing & compressor wheel & compressor inlet from a late-80s Mercury Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. Those are fairly rare parts and the wheel is the only one of the three parts still made. The odds against those parts turning up in a country where the car was never sold, when that part only comes up for sale once in a blue-moon even in its original volume-sale country... would be enough to make me think that THIS week, among all the weeks which made up my life, is THE week to go-for-it! I certainly would like to see a picture of the completed-work to verify those are the parts you got.

I would imagine the parts are not from a T Bird but the compressor wheel will be matched and the housing machined to fit. We do have some good engineering in this country :smt081 IIRC Sy had something similar done (not sure if it was the same shop) but wasn`t happy with it and went back to stock :?

Monty got it in one, the compressor wheel I believe is the T-Bird which as you say is still available, the housing is a new housing that has been machined to suit. This means that it was just a bolt in job with no adaption required.

Today I managed to complete the refit after watching the Monaco qually. Everything seemed to fit nicely but after running the engine for a while I noticed oil weeping from the oil feed and burning off on the turbo, a quick tweak up and this has stopped (I think). Unfortunatly after a bit of a drive I started getting overboost which was the most violent I've ever felt from an Elan before slamming into the fuel cut-off  , I have checked all the wastegate piping which is all secured and when she cools down I'll check to see if theres a bit of stiffness in the new actuator.

One problem I've got is I've missplaced the bolts that hold the oil and coolant feeds to there brackets, not a major thing however and I'll replace them soon enough. I've also chipped off some of the coating from the feed pipes :(

My thoughts on the bigger compressor combined with the no second silencer 2.5" Piper:

- Slightly later pick-up of Boost (Acceptable but gives a much bigger kick up the backside than standard)
- Gradual pick-up to around 0.4 - 0.5Bar followed by very rapid increase thereafter.
- Pops and Burbles slightly less than Peco but still does it readily.
- Quieter than Peco at very low revs.
- Nice Smooth Growl turning into a Roar when you plant your foot.
- Out drags an Audi 100 S4 4.2 V8 quattro (C4)

I feel the turbos got much more to give top end now and will allow higher boost levels once the injectors, map sensor etc are sorted.

I no longer have the measurements, but here is the stock VS T-Bird compressor housing. The outside diameter is the same, but the intake and internal air passageways are much larger to support the size of the wheel. It's nice to know that the wheel alone gives the increased boost it does VS the Audi.

I am impressed that you got the turbo off by itself. Like most I said "screw that" and took off the intake manifold. Maybe you can give some pointers on removing the turbo.

Hmm, Odd!! :? Gave the wastegate a wiggle this morning and when driving down to the airfield for some flying I still got overboost. An hour or so later and it appears to have cured itself, made the most of the sun and covered a few miles around the local area and low and behold everything is working fine. :-D

Why certainly, all you've got to do is make sure that somebody else has already removed the turbo recently. It comes off a treat then.

If it was early enough in the morning, the denser charge may just have been enough to produce overboost, whereas when you drove back later as it was nice and sunny the air density would have been less.

However if it's as marginal as that, you're going to see overboost again come autumn.

Nope, I was well used to that on my old Elan with the 2,5" Piper and no ported wastegate, that used to overboost when the temperatures were close to freezing.

It was overboosting around 15:00 today after the F1 but had stopped by 17:00 and still wasn't by around 19:00 when it was significantly cooler. I'll just have keep an eye on it for now and hope it was just the newness making it a bit stiff.
