I just think it's hilarious that its the beat-up, bent, paint chipped, improvised heat shield that someone at Kenneth Brown was proud enough to claim with their sticker. Either that or it was done ironically? Loving the progress so far though, keep it up!

Interesting turn of events here, not related directly to the rebuild, but SWMBO has suggested that as she only does about 2000miles a year she may sell her car & take it on as her daily driver!!! When I say daily, she drives about once a fortnight.

The 3d printed door lock escutcheon arrived yesterday, this was a first off.

Pretty close, a minor tweek to the profile so it sits down slightly better is all that's required.





The lock button fits well too.

Looking at how the original ones fit I would be happy as they are great work, I can see a developing business for all the door plastics, spreading to all the other brittle 30 year old plastic.

I've been thinking more & more about how 3d printing can help keep old classic cars & bikes on the road. If you have an original part (even the opposite hand to the one you need) it's easy to 3d scan a part, if not it's a case of getting the verniers out & manually entering the data, slightly more time consuming, but very workable.

With modern materials almost anything can be replicated, including aluminium, steel (even heat treatable steels), titanium. In most cases the mechanical properties of the printed part are better than a die casting of the same material. There are limitations, but they are reducing all the time.

I'm not sure you'd get many group buy takers for door lock escutcheons but set up a group buy for highly polished replacement turbo heatshields and I reckon you'd get 20 names on day 1 and 40 by the end of the week

TBH, a subdued black would suit me better than polished....... maybe carbon fibre even.......

Carbon could be done, issue comes with making a mould, the carbon work itself is easy, just use a high temp Phenolic resin to cope with the temps.

Ooh, not carbon fibre, thanks. Great material, but hate the look of the stuff..that’s the only reason I don’t have a pair of Wayne’s CFRP seat protectors.

My 'spark plug cover' and 'oil seperator cover' are both carbon fibre sheet (I got fed up with trying to keep the ridged metal one from going manky) - so it wouldn't look out of place......

.... done for the material specification, not for the chavvy look!

Would use it more if I could find a reliable means of painting it (although I could always wrap it, but that kinda defeats the object).

Oi. I've got chavvy carbon fibre effect film in quite a few places on my yellow one. It makes it go faster
