Ted:

What's wrong with yours? Do need a tank with sender assembly or just the tank?

If it was never replaced, the gas tank is the subject of a Lotus recall so - if they can get one - your local Lotus dealer may still have an obligation to replace it. I just purchased a car that had it done not long ago and they were obliged to do it under the recall.

tank only. Filled up yesterday, drove 1 hour, stopped and smelled gas odor, checked underneath and found seepage from bottom of tank. appears to be coming from the bottom seam? doing research to see if it can be repair in situ. i think i'd rather give it a try in place as opposed to the tank removal route incurring more time and effort. it's a toss up between plastic welding with iron or some type of epoxy. Funny that the crack is not where expected (filler neck). Won't know until i drive more (to use up the gas), then get it up off the ground to better inspect.

Unfortunately, Lotus US stopped honoring that recall around 4 or 5 years ago since the NHTSA only mandated they keep it active for 10 years. New tanks are still available from Lotus UK but not with the sender/pump anymore. I don't think a US dealer can order one, but that is up to Lotus US in Michigan.

Part Number is D100L0028H
The current price in the UK is £482.20 (around $650.00 with conversion fees) before packing and shipping.

Ted: the tank is made of HDPE which is by design not going to allow any glues to work and plastic welding is usually a hit or miss adventure.

Tap Plastics claims they have a solution, but the jury is still out.

Well here's what i did for the repair today. The bottom seam was leaking as shown. I guess after 25 years, it weakened at that point. You can see the gas "weeping" from the seam.

I used a soldering gun and attempted to plastic weld the seam. I got it to stop weeping. (sorry, no picture), then sanded the area to roughen the surface and used JB water weld to cover and strengthen the area as shown:

finally i painted it black and reattached the tank strap for the finished product shown here:

now let's see how long the repair lasts!!!! :D

There are still tanks in the UK. I got one a year ago by way of Dave Bean. SJ was able to get them also.

Thanks all, but for now, i'm satisfied with my repair. If it leaks in the future, i will then look into investing into a new replacement tank.
