That's good to know, thank you.

The care had a bespoke ss exhaust fitted by the previous owner, so I am going to have a look underneath just in case the whole pipe has been replaced.

It looks like aftermarket! (Alternative downpipe)
Is it cast Iron, or welded steel?

Look here for (a lot!) more info and pictures:

It looks like steel to me, so you can drill and weld a bung with correct Thread for the O2 sensor on the downpipe. (M14x1.25?)

Cor, that's interesting info...never seen that before...and looking through sensor hole in the top plate it's gotta be 'aftermarket'.
(And nowhere else that'll take the sensor fitting...:? ?)

If you take a close look at the picture in hj2's link, you can just make out a boss on the fabricated pipe at the top. I imagine that is the mount for an O² sensor.

So Piper must have made 2 versions: SE and S2/Fed.

As said no reason why you can't add such a fixing, if you can take it all apart!

Perhaps you can manage with just the heatshield off.

However... if it IS an aftermarket downpipe, you have lots of space below to work with and the pipe will come off in no time :D

Depending on the actual downpipe, there may or may not be a port somewhere out of view (because the heat shield is in the way).

I would remove the shield and see if there is one, or if one could be welded in somewhere suitable.

I would then either get the pipe ceramic coated, or wrap it in heat bandage and do away with the shield as it stands.

For what it's worth I fully agree with HJ2's plastic bonnet/turbo proximity observation.

In my humble opinion if you want 1499/O2 sensor/emissions security/stoich fuelling/all the other good stuff at MoT time (and if there's no hidden sensor access below your h/shield) you ought to get hold of the proper item - if the rest of your bespoke system will support it - and get the heat shield working as it should.

An interesting post - pls keep us informed...

Does anyone know when Lotus started fitting the wiring loom with all the closed loop wiring?

On UK cars it was towards the end of 1991. My car was registered in March 1992 and has the extra loom for sensor.

I don't think there is a specific VIN change over, it's Lotus! It's pot luck if your car from that period has it.

Mine is a Jan 1991 SE and had the wiring.

As John says, knowing Lotus, there won't be a specific date, but more a case of using whichever wiring loom was on the shelf at the time the car went down the production line.

(Unless Pete knows better)

A bit like MG when the cars were put together using whatever was laying around at the time.

Hi guys, I’ve now had a look under the car and as I thought the bespoke ss exhaust goes all the way to the turbo. Looks like I’ll have to fond someone who can drill the ss and weld in a socket to take the sensor.
