just been thinking about the rear light, and had an idea and wondered if anyone else liked it or had a better idea. i do love some of the other conversions but i though this was a nice compromise between modern and origional.... have no idea how to achieve it tho... the basic idea is origional lenses or atleast shape with led lights set behind which you can see until they light up.
ORIGIONAL
LIGHTS OFF
LIGHTS ON

Is the refector that's already there part of the cover, or part of the lens attached to the inside of the cover?

The reflector is silver...
the smoked cover has a red lens in it..
I like the idea..

ok so after getting to know my elan a little better it looks like i may need to start budgeting, so if i got the lens tinted, and left the red square in the middle alone (im assuming thats the reflector) then it would look better and be lot easier/cheaper that the full blown led conversion. Anyone spot any problems with that? lol

I think Lotus had enough trouble getting enough light out of the lenses to meet the requirements. If you reduce the light transmitted, then you need to increase the light emitted; that might be difficult to do, even with LEDs.

Nope... the reflector is silver and glued into the light... the red square is just a coloured cover to make it look red...

Matt, If you are really bored and want to make a lot of people like you; You could source a replacement for the outer shell of the light. The moulds are out there and probably have a factory attached willing to make a run. They would probably only cost a few quid and sell for a lot more!
PS Is your car an N/A and on the register?

There are a few manufactures of the external smoked covers... one is in the Uk. I've never looked into the manufacture but it would be fairly easy to find out if they would go into production again..
on another front you could put the reflectors on the rear of the car..
e.g. reflector style mini mud flaps as not to distract from the style of the car..

Sorry if I am going Off Topic slightly.Dave, do you have anymore details about the manufacturer of the covers? IIRC this has been mentioned before but fizzled out.
