I was thinking about developing a modification to automatically lower/raise the side window whenever the door is opened/closed.

This would also get my vote. I have been thinking along these lines since a mate bought an XKR Jag that has this feature.

I think the new Mini's have this feature aswell!
I think this along with new seals would not only get my vote but the majority of others aswell!
Unless you have already replaced the A post seals [if you were lucky to find any] you will certainly need to at sometime in your Elan ownership.
It is also a cost concern as i'm sure a short piece of rubber can be designed and produced far less than the present Lotus £135

Right, sine there aeems to be a fair amount of interest in this ovr the year, I am going to finish off designing the "A piller tidyer" and "auto window drop " in these coming months.

Oh, I have a MiG welder so if anyone did want a sump guard doing, then put it down on paper and we can have a go at fabricating it....keep it simple and cheap to make though please.

Here's one for the competition and it's not on Paul Watkin's list. If you have been following the thread in Track Rod Ends you wiil know that the QH reference quoted is incorrect. Smart money is on a 1990 Corsa ball joint reamed out and re-threaded to accept a larger diameter track rod arm (Lotus philosophy - buy em cheap and bore em out!). The majority of Elans are now nearing 20 years old and all those on the road will eventually fail an MOT on worn ball joints.

Some lathe brain needs to really check out the Corsa unit then SJS charge £66+VAT = £77.55 QH Corsa approx £10 plus reaming and tapping £10 per unit

For a batch of 1000 which would treat 500 cars £77.55 - £ 20 = £57.55 X 1000 = a saving of £57000 (not bad)

If we treat the whole population, say 4000 cars (very optimistic because of breakers and non-takers) £57.5 x 8000 units = a saving of £460000
Enough to rescue 100 elans from Fleabay for track days , buy a couple of Eagles, Ethoses, Ethii or what ever it is called as a prize for me (even more optomistic) and still have some dosh over to invest in B & B

I've just paid 100 GBP for mine to be fibreglassed, but surely once one set is made they can be fabricated and sold cheaply? Say 25 squid for a pair...

I would have ordered a set and I'm sure many others would too.

Sounds nice but as weak and unobtainable as the window motors are thats a lot more wear than they were designed for (assuming they were actually designed that is )
