they list M12 x 1.5 in a cap screw and lots of others including NAS and AN bolts

Thanks, Bob - I'll check. The problem isn't finding the M12x1.5 30mm; that's a This is a DIN 933 standard configuration and readily available in Class 10.9 (US grade 8 ); however, DIN 933 is fully threaded from base to cap. The equivalent partial-thread standard is DIN 931; similar in appearance to NAS bolts with an unthreaded shoulder between cap and end. Unfortunately, DIN 931 bolts don't seem to be available in 1.5 pitch, only the standard 1.75. DIN6914 also looked promising until I realized the cap is 8mm and thread length is spec'd at 21mm. On a 30mm bolt, that means no shoulder. I think I may as well try finding a left-threaded muffler bearing. :smt120

edit: in the end, I purchased longer M12 x 1.5 cap screws, not threaded to the head, then cut them to the requisite 30mm length.

The original bolts that held the caliper sliding pins to the hub carrier are threaded all the way so I do not see this as a problem. The M12 bolts are not the weakest link in the chain as the caliper to bracket bolts are smaller in diameter at M10 so they should if any thing fail first. When you look at the bolt in shear then as the shear loads are across the threaded portion and you can not get around it as it is threaded in the hub carrier. Do not forget you have a clamp load to overcome and in the case of the M12 bolts this is in the order of 4000kg per bolt.
The rear bracket mounting have a slightly different arrangement and the holes the bolts screw into have the first portion of the hole unthreaded so the shear forces are across the shank of the bolt but then they are only four M8 cap screws.
With hat to rotor bolts then they are in shear and because, in a lot of instances, they are a nut and bolt arrangement the shear load can be carried on the shank of the bolt if the correct bolts are used. For this application I find NAS bolts the best solution as you can specify the shank length in 1/16" increments.

Dorman CV Boot installed, back on the road at last

Postby tigerdog » Sat 26.09.2009, 18:57

I had forgotten just how much FUN our Elans are! Finally took him out for a bit of a drive today and came home feeling wonderful. New brakes certainly do stop! No drippy CV boot. Life is fun!

A very minor change

Postby tigerdog » Sun 12.09.2010, 22:02

It's funny, isn't it, how the more you look at something, the more bothered you are by the teeniest of dissatisfactions? Happened to me yesterday. I finally got fed up looking at the ugly top of the oil separator. Those horrid philips head screws!!!

Re: Smaug: Return of The Green Monster - Best Lotus!

Postby techlectic » Tue 05.10.2010, 02:43

Thought it appropriate to add to this thread that Smaug was the winner for the Lotus marque in the 2010 San Diego British Car Day, beating a number of Elises, Esprits, first-gen Elans, and 3 other M100s. Smaug was clearly deserving, being so nicely upgraded and beautifully detailed, with interesting documentation about the car and the model on display for everyone. And Tigerdog even credited LEC in his acceptance speech.

Congrats Tigerdog! Sorry my camera battery died before your award acceptance.

2011 Objectives

Postby tigerdog » Sat 29.01.2011, 19:27

Well, it's time to go on record with the few things I want to accomplish for Smaug in this new year. Here's the list in no particular order:
    - Wheel refurb and new tyres 8)
    - Repair and repaint the "owie" on the front bumper that I inherited from Houdini :poke:
    - Manual cooling fan override with timer (to pump water through the turbo during cool down
    - Fit the new steering rack :banghead:
    - Beg Alan for a custom Mountain chip to work with the 3Bar sensor and 550cc injectors
I'm not holding my breath on the last one. Other than that, drive more! :burnout:
Check back occasionally and see how much I get done

Doesn't the turbo cooling pump run on after the car is shut down?

Looking forward to seeing the car in Las Vegas.

Only if the coolant in the thermostat housing is hot enough to trigger the fan switch. .

New Boost Gauge - resurrecting the Fun Boy Three

Postby tigerdog » Sun 24.04.2011, 17:02

Smaug's FBT gauges had been replaced with Autometer units by Houdini. Now, a new boost gauge was required because of the big turbo, etc, but I've never been happy with the mismatch between the black-and-white Autometer faces compared to the rest of the panel. I decided to reinstall the originals but needed a different boost gauge. Using an Amazon.com gift certificate I got as a Christmas present from my company, I bought a VDO 150-121 mechanical 25psi boost/30in Hg vacuum gauge, like this:
Image

Nice gauge but not at visual match, either. A little time with a screwdriver, scanner and GIMP graphics program, some photo paper, a printer et voila!

It even uses the same size vacuum pipe fitting as the Autometer. I'll update the post with the finished dashboard once I've bolted everything back together.
