CheapScan - complete
Posted: Thu 06.03.2008, 22:48Following Ailwyn's unfortunate breakdown on the hard shoulder, I got to thinking about what would be useful to help an Elan owner (or even the breakdown services) in a similar situation.
Anything relying on a pc/laptop like ElanScan was out because it would either not be in the car or if it was, would have a flat battery or have suffered from flood damage (especially if it was in Ailwyn's footwell).
It had to be idiot proof with simple instructions to enable it's use, even by the most elderly member in adverse conditions.
It had to be cheap so that it was affordable to even those with leather bound moth collections. :gray:
It had to be small enough to be put in the glove box or door pocket and forgotten about. Too large and it would be a nuisance the day before you broke down and you'd have taken it out and left it at home.
It had to be waterproof as it is likely that it it will be raining when you break down.
It had to be easy to put together - I'm buggered if I was getting lumbered into 'knocking up a few interfaces' again. :-D
To appease, sorry appeal to the Lotus traditionalists, it had to be BRG preferably with a Norfolk Mustard stripe or two.
It had to be completed by Donington.
In summary, the spec. was to produce something for Donington that was self-powered or powered by sustainable sources, cheap, small, light, simple, foolproof, waterproof, green and yellow.
As posted elsewhere, I completed development some time ago and now I am pleased to say that I have finished the first production run. Unfortunately, I have not been able to meet one of the design aims, so I fear there is little chance of winning Ailwyn's prestigious prize and firkin of beer - before you say anything, I saw it before you amended your post so don't go denying it.
Here it is. Now taking orders for CheapScan (I wanted to call it FreeScan but the Esprit boys coined that one) which is available for collection free of charge from Donington (What do you mean Ailwyn, Donington 2009
). I would draw your attention to this thread however.
