Plug and play LED park/turn signal up grade:

What you will need:

2 clear indicator lenses (pic 1)
2 park/driving (DRL) turn signal combination flexible strips (12 inches is what I used - okrrr... ;-) - although I folded 3 lights behind. 8 inch would probably suffice :-/ (Test them with a 9 volt first) (pic 2)
2 indicator bulb to LED adapters (plug right into your bulb socket) (pic 3)
2 park light to to LED adapters (plug right into your bulb socket)(pic 4)
Black electrical tape. (to sheath the colored wires that will show through the clear lenses)
scissors for cutting tape.
Glue gun (clear quality glue that won't yellow)
Pliers (to snap off the tab between the bulb houses that brace the lenses)

Build your lights
1. Take your adapters and cut off the ends that hold the bulbs -
2. Attach the correct wires to the adapters. The switch back led lights have 3 wires. One black - ground, one yellow - turn positive, one white -park lights positive)
3. Since you have 4 wires coming from the car and adapters your will combine the negatives.
4. Lay the strip on the lens from screw hole to screw hold and tack its directly to the lens. The glue is clear and wont show through the outside of the lens lens.
5. Let cool to dry.
Attaching your new lights.
6. Remove your old lenses.
7. Remove the bulbs.
8. Take your pliers and pinch the small plastic piece between your bulb houses and snap it off. The surrounding gaskets will keep your lenses in place and safe when you install them.
9. Insert the park light bulb adapter. You may have to hold the bulb holder from behind and under the bumper, because the bulb holders do slide back while your trying to insert them. For the turn lights it will work right away. For the park light you may have to turn the bulb adapter until you get the correct polarity. So do this before you plug the turn signals in.
10. Take your black electrical and cover the colored wires that will be visible through your clear lenses. Then tuck everything nicely into the bulb housing and screw on your new led switch back lenses!

Now Marvel at how amazing your lights look! (pic on)

Your Elan must be as heavy as the Rangey, what with all that LED.

I'll get my coat...

This looks briljant!

Now if only there was a way that one wouldn't see the 'dots' of the LED, but more of a light strip like BMW's Celis...
I don't like the Audi look, but i do like your solution and have improved how others see you better without raising the flappers!

That's interesting and something I've been thinking about MacGyvering up for a little while now. I was always under the impression that there would have to be some intermediary device though. Something that would sense that the turn signals were one, shut off the driving light BUT be smart enough to know that the signal from the turn signal is pulsing on and off (to give you the blinking) and then NOT turn the driving light back on inbetween blinks - if you know what i mean. Ideally, you'd want the turn signal to alternate between amber and off - not amber and white.

Is this what's happewning for you with this setup?

Looks really good, plus a great write up. How wide are the LED's?

I'm sure someone will correct me but I think in the Europe the side lights must stay on while indicating.

Maybe some narrower LED's with the amber above the white so that the white can stay on all the time. I already have the clear lenses, it's Ebay time. :)

Sorry for the super late check on this thread. The lights are automatic when you switch the blinker on the white turns off while blinking amber. The when the signal is done it automatically switches back to white on its own. Just like the audi's. I really like it and you see them on the Future Lotus Models the clip I took from the 2013 Lotus Espree Promo . My future project it to convert them to day time running lamps that are always on. Now I always switch the park lights on because I love the look.

Update: I did this mod a while back but wanted to post the simplest way to add DLR's. I searched around my car to find a light that always comes on when the key switch is turned. I found that the little light in the window lift switch comes on all the time the key is turned. I simply tapped the positive light wire and ran one line (I chose a white colored wire to find easily) under the center console with the use of a straightened coat hanger under the dash and felt around under the dash behind the glove box and sure enough there are a few places through the engine firewall to run a small wire. I was able to see it in the engine compartment easily because it was white! Ran the wire to the light pods and bingo I have DRL that activate when I turn the key! I just removed the bulb that goes in the park light socket. I added a simple radio shack mini switch inside the console cubby box to turn them off if I ever needed to. Although I haven't ever needed to turn the DRL's off for any reason it's nice to know I can. If there is anyone who would like pic's I can post some. I have not had any problems at all with this mod, since my DRL's are LED's there is no need to worry about power draw from the window switch bulb because its so very minimal and produces no heat. Questions and clarifications - just ask. :D

-James

To answer the question about the switch backs it stays amber the entire time the blinker is activated. It does not go to white between blinks. It only goes back to white when the stalk is released back to center. Just like in the Audis.
