Another unsolicited opinion....I have the Piper 2.25 with sports cat and pre cat eliminator. I think it sounds great on any length run. Only registered 92 on the sound test at Castle Combe on Sat which is odd as they measured it at 97 the last time I took it there. Quality bit of kit. In the spec I have it requires a friendly MOT tester (emissions not noise) but you'd have no problem with an SE instead of an S2 as the test std is different.

Got the Exhaust fitted by the local specialist.
a bit comforting to see them as a specialist when my car was side by side with a Ferrari .
I gone for the 2 1/4 bore with "somewhat between mid and full sports" tune... which I have serious doubts about after 200 yards of leaving the place.
I think it will probably be too noisy for motorway driving, and very noisy at low speeds. making me feel a bit like a boy racer looking for trouble.... with a slow car...
The plus side the car feels like it gained low end torque, but will need to do more miles to confirm that "feeling".

Received email confirmation from SJ telling me the rear hubs have been posted. it would be very lucky if they arrived tomorrow.
Same email from brake parts uk, stating estimated delivery date for the front discs as tomorrow.

Will probably take pictures and record for youtube channel the job of the rears. and possibly the fronts. just to add more content :)

I changed my exhaust for 1.25 SS a few years back and, yes, like you I thought it was really loud an the return from the fit. Nowadays I hardly notice, so you get used to it, it must still be loud though because when it arrived here all the Cypriots were commenting that it wouldn't pass the mot on the noise (it did though), so it must be loud to the uninitiated!

Pete,

you mean 2.25?
I think my mistake was on the choise of silencer.
I was inclined to get a full sport, but not sure it was too loud, the guy that fits it told me most people go for a mis sport tune and he could get me something halfway mid sport and full sport. so i asked him to fit that.

judging from the sound and my recollection of others cars at the midlands meetup. i think this is about 50% louder than the others.

Joao,

The noise level should reduce with a bit of age/use - any tiny gaps in any joints will fill with carbon soot, and the same stuff will give a layer of coating to all the internal metal surfaces (particularly in the silencer itself) - this layer will help to dampen any resonant vibration noise, and the whole thing will seem much more 'relaxed'.
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually.....

good.
this thing really needs to dampen the sound a bit.
will see how loud it sounds by the time of the next WM meetup.

I had a "noisy" PNM Cybox fitted to the Black Beastie a few weeks ago and it's quite quiet. Quiter than the original Peco I had on Rambo

Whether it be Peco, Cybox or Piper they're all good and make a good sound. Makes the M100 sound like a true sports car with that rorty sound :burnout:

Joao,
You should try an N/A with a sports exhuast as there's no turbo in the way to quieten the noise down........... :burnout:

We'll have a vote re your exhaust at the next WM meeting :gathering: if your there of course!

You could always download a DB app onto your phone? This or similar? https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... d&hl=en_GB

Intend to be there. if things go according to plan, i shall have a passed MOT saturday if not tomorow afternoon (depends how much the rear hubs give me)

tb10 wrote:You could always download a DB app onto your phone? This or similar? https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... d&hl=en_GB

I did not think of that.
It should be a very easy way to compare my loudness values to everyone else's for the meantime. assuming the app comes already calibrated or there is a simple way to calibrate it.

Sadly the noisiness of the new exhaust is far from my biggest worry.
My other car is still off the road. to pass the MOT i need to fix its ABS and the diagnosis process is leaving me quite stumbled. to top that up, it developed some white smoke (not always visible) and burnt rubber smell (always there) every time I drive it even at very short distances (out of the driveway, 3 point turn and back into driveway)
But i will be leaving the Celica GT4 moaning to the Celica owners club website.

for the moment I am feeling very positive about the elan, if things go according to plan tomorow, and i get MOT done saturday, I will be driving the elan everyday for the whole summer :D

I do not doubt that, there are comments from many members all over the site giving good feedback on them all.
Its a bit too late now for me to change, to be honest, considering the difference in cost and taking into account the commodity of getting the job done (by someone else) same day, so far, I do not regret it.

I just have doubts my choice of silencer was the "wisest" one. (no John, I do not know how to spell it correctly, neither of the word even exists)
But as the other John mentioned. I shall have the WM peers to review it soon, hopefully.

that sounds like a easy one to diagnose/check. (meaning ill be checking it as soon as the Elan is MOT'ed)
If your correct, in the car it is, a hell of a pain to solve. (as far as I'm aware)
Do you think it's worth it to open a new topic on the "off topic" section asking for help ?
I feel a bit uneasy to bring problems with my other cars into this forum as its (probably) a frown upon car to start, and just not a Elan, or even a lotus for that effect. therefore completely out of topic.

Considering it already failed, with the issues previously mentioned. and i got the parts for the issues referred, I hope not much... (fingers crossed) :-D

My money's on another emissions failure. Make sure you take it for a hammering before the re-test and the engines nicely warmed up. A dose of fuel additive may also help

Possible. but the car was on a pretty long journey not that long ago to "TLF International Lotus Day | MBW/Brooklands | 8th May 2016"
I can rev it a lot in the driveway as a precaution. the neighbours won't be pleased tho....
I have fuel additive at hand. but the tank is nearly full so it will need to burn a lot in order to get through any of it...

Last year it passed with flying colors after the exhaust leak was fixed. reason why i just assumed it was going to be fine.

Joao

Rambo is right: run the engine and let the fans come on and off a couple of times immediately before you go for the test. This will allow the engine to thoroughly warm up and keep emission readings down. It does work: I did it last year for the MOT and the reading was about .5 lower than previous year.
