New 91 Lotus M100 owner

Postby JPope » Sat 11.10.2014, 19:23

I bought my First lotus about a month ago. I got it from the original owner and it had 84,599 miles. it runs great, although it needs paint and driver seat reupholstered. it has started running rough under heavy acceleration. i am going to check the plugs, wires. and clean the fuel system as well as run a cleaner through the induction system. i will post some pictures once i crop them.

Welcome aboard!

About the rough running: Check the sparkplugs are gapped correctly (0.8mm) and do the wastegate wiggle!

Hmm, not too sure about that.
I agree with the gapping, after all it costs nothing.
Fair enough to say that a wastegate wiggle costs nothing too, however if the car is running rougly but not generating any fault codes (do a paper-clip test) then I would change the coil packs first. They always seem to break down before the HT leads.

Hello and tune her up. Plugs, coils, and leads then set timing. :-D

thank you all i will be doing plugs wires, and more than likely the coils in a week or so. it only does it when it have been raining. on a clear day it never misses a beat. so im sure it is the excess moisture. and the left turn signal has stopped working so i need to check the switch this weekend, since it still works the right side.

First things first: suggest you check the bulb.

The dash bulb works then I use it to turn right and it sometimes works when i turn left. Since it is a intermittent problem, i was suspecting the switch, i have seen that on other cars, how ever i will check the bulbs before i pull the switch to test it. thank you sir.

Agree with usual assessment of plugs, plug wires, etc. At nearly 90K miles, you're about due. Wires can be had in the US from Kingsborne Wire Works - if you mention LEC, they may still offer a discount, I hand-carried about 15 sets from California to the UK a few years back for a group buy. 8mm leads work well, though they don't fit the standard brackets, Kingsborne sends new separators with the kit. NGK Iridium plugs work very well however they must be carefully regapped to the aforementioned 8mm since one preset gap is too narrow, the other too wide.

If that doesn't do it, it may be ElanScan time.

thank you all for the advice. I ended up having to pull the trans and found a shop that could rebuild it. the 5th gear nut had backed off and it was locking me out of 5th, once i get the trans back this month, I will be doing the tune up along with upper ball joints, and some other suspension parts, and another head light motor. I went to pull the plug wires off of the spark plugs and they are stuck or seized onto the plugs. also I am trying to find a gentleman in Dayton Ohio that has a green Elan,
