Rear Hub/Disc conversion second run + Hi-spec brakes

As some people have expressed an interest in the rear hubs having missed the first run I am going to start a second list.
I can then see depending on numbers how it equates with regards to the price but I feel that I may be able to get them made for around the same price as the first run provided I am not only looking at a couple of sets.
The first run was £130.48 inc vat plus delivery
When you look at the price and compare the cost of new standard discs £170.00 ish it become favorable as you only need a pair of low cost GM discs.
Can not start the list with me as I have them all ready.

This is a requirement if you want to upgrade the rear calipers to Hi-spec 2 pot but can only be done if the fronts have been upgraded first and can not be done with the Wilwood 15" kit as it does not increase the front braking enough.

Time frame is numbers dependant.
This is a list for the Hubs only which can with the addition of a low cost disc be used with the current caliper.
I would like to keep the two seperate.

Would you recommend enlarging my front discs to suit the rears (mine is the Hispec upgrade to suit the 15" rims). This is an option as it looks like I'll soon be getting a set of S2 alloys. If so, are the calipers still suitable if I get the appropriate brackets or does the whole lot need to change?

BTW, I saw AndyP yesterday so I have my pads now. He kindly offered to bring back the wayward pads and post them to you when he returns.

There is not a lot in it as the 15" brakes, needless to say, will fit under the S2 rims.
The 16" kit does increase the brakes by about 7.5%, which is only really felt in terms of pedal input.
The 15" kit will still be more than adequate to stop the car, in fact the limitation will be the tyres not the brakes. As for the rears the only differance would be in the size of the rear discs 16" fronts uses a 256mm diameter rear disc and the 15"kit uses a 240mm rear disc.

If you wanted to change to a 16" kit then the discs and caliper brackets would need to be changed every thing else remains the same.

Very timely ! my rear disks are in poor shape, so shiny new hubs and (cheaper) replacement disks sounds pretty good to me

I know that this is a 'list' thread, not specifically an 'information' one, but it may help people on the list, or from the first buy.....

The disks required to fit the 'standard' rear brake calipers (and these hubs) is an Apec DSK117.

If you still have standard front brakes, the front discs used are Apec DSK518.

I had a set of 4 from www.thehappymotorist.co.uk for £44.03 inc VAT and delivery

front (DSK518) are listed for a Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 ('88-'95) at £12.03 each.

rear (DSK117) are listed for a Vauxhall Astra 1.4 ('91-'98) at £6.51 each.

They arrived within 48 hours, and the company (as well as being the cheapest 'All In' price I could find) were easy & helpful to deal with.

My rear disks have just failed the MOT - excessive corrosion on the inner face

Cost to replace in total, including reconditioned disks, new bearings, and pads from SJ's £140 ish, although I was minded to do the bearings anyway since they've been in for about 10 years.

I reckon the reconditioned disks may rust a little faster than new - (dunno why , I just do)

I'm sorely tempted with this, since in future all I would need to do is replace the disks.

So.....Bob or anyone.... any idea whether I will be able to use the same new bearings?

The DSK117 is not limited to the Astra and is available for a range of Vauxhall cars plus one Daewoo model.

The rear wheel bearings are exactly the same as the original disc/hub.
I did source a SKF bearing that fits see http://wikilec.9600.org/ and if needed I can supply these at around £24.00 an axle set, thats two wheel bearing kits. but that price is a little numbers dependant.

The total cost of hubs, discs, bearings and pads should be around £210.00 as apposed to £240.00 if using the original disc/hubs (new) and in the future the cost to replace discs is significantly reduced

Note: This works out a lower cost option when replacing the rear discs and in the future you only have to replace the discs which are cheap sub £30.00 the pair if using the standard caliper.

I've been away from the forum for a while, so there's been a LOT of reading to catch up on! This looks like a really well thought out and engineered modification. Well done that man Bob . Still catching up on other threads regarding front/rear brake upgrades, so more reading required, but in the meantime......I'm in!
