If the price of just the downpipe were published, i might be back in :-D

It appears that if this is the only run being contemplated, it's a case of 'now or never' for that part - i'm sure i can source the oil/water pipework locally in slow-time, and save up for the turbo as & when i want it.

Hi what is the increase in performance with this upgrade on a standard car? has anyone done an Elanscan or 0-60 times?

Cheers,

Phil, I think it depends on how far you take this upgrade. We all know that more boost = more power and that the standard IHI turbo is approaching it's limits with the 0.9-0.95 bar boost the everest/elysium chip can get from it. With the turbo upgrade and an everest chip limiting boost to this level I would not necessarily expect any significant increase in power beyond that possible from the standard turbo and everest chip. There should be some benefit in faster spool up from a ball bearing as opposed to journal bearing turbo, but that will be at least partly offset by the larger size of the 2560. The 2560 will flow more air as it is bigger and therefore hit target boost levels at lower turbo RPM than the IHI unit but I think the biggest difference from standard or everest chipped will be the opening pressure of the wastegate. Stock wastegate opens at .4 bar so the ECU has control after that, Marie has fitted a 12 PSI wastegate I believe so you have up to 12 PSI (0.8bar) of boost available before the ECU can exert any control, essentially you have a fixed manual boost control up to 12 PSI.

The beauty for me is the further upgrade potential that this upgrade offers that are simply not possible with the standard IHI turbo as it is maxed out at 0.9-0.95 bar. The 2560 upgrade with standard injectors and the standard 2 bar map sensor means you cannot realistically run much more boost than that possible with an everest chip. However with 550cc injectors and a 3 bar map sensor you can run significantly more boost than 1 bar (the 3 bar map sensor would theoretically permit 2 bar of boost but whether the engine or injectors could cope with that I don't know but do doubt). Once you fit the 550cc injectors and 3 bar MAP sensor you either need a custom chip or a new ECU (Haltech) and the ability to map it. My car Dynoed at 204BHP (crank) with a much earlier version of the everest chip, I don't expect to see a huge amount more with a 2560 alone (but a 12 PSI wastegate would make 0.8 bar boost available much earlier than at present) however with 550cc injectors, 3 bar MAP sensor and appropriate engine mapping I would have thought 250BHP at the wheels is easily achievable. Garret claim the 2560 is good for up to 330BHP (crank I assume) so I don't think 250 at the wheels, say 300 at the crank, is too demanding with the full upgrade.

It's only my opinion for what thats worth, but the logic seems sound to me.

For those who have opted for an advanced kit (ie without Turbo) I remind you of the earlier post by Paul Watkins which stated that he had a contact who could source a group buy of 10 GT2560s for £540 each inc VAT and delivery. As it doesn't look as though a group buy of 10 is likely I asked Paul to find out what was possible for a group buy of 5 and he has advised that for 5 it would be £560 inc VAT and delivery. I think this is a very attractive option as all import duties and taxes are paid and you will have a UK supplier to go back to with any warranty issues. Big question is can we get a group buy of 5?

1. Nige.

I don't want to talk anyone out of getting their Turbo through from the States via Marie but at $1976 for the complete kit you can expect to pay an additional 4% in import duty and then a further 17.5% in VAT on the new total. I just don't see it likely that the Turbos could sneak in under the wire, and unless the USA suddenly joins the EU  (or the EU joins the USA   ) the duty and VAT is payable regardless of what US taxes have been paid. On $1976.38 the 4% import duty and 17.5% VAT brings the total up to $2415.13. For the $1052 advanced kit with 4% import duty and 17.5% VAT the total is $1285.54, This means a Turbo imported from the States with all UK duty and taxes paid will cost $1129.59 which at todays exchange rate (good for us in the UK) of 1.9891 means a Turbo from the States will cost £567.89, if the exchange rate goes against us you will pay more than this.

I'm just working this one through in my head with what works for me and doing the sums, the choice is yours but you may as well make an informed choice and I hope the above helps.

Would this effect Marie & Ekapol in anyway, ie have they ordered any yet, or will it effect the price they are getting them for, as i do see what your saying Nige, just don't wish to mess Marie about :!:

Me neither Paul which is why I've posted it openly so all can see, comment and decide. I have assumed (maybe correctly maybe not) that neither Marie nor Ekapol would place firm orders until the deadline of 5 Jul had been reached. Posting this after that deadline would have been unfair. From my perspective I've already made my decision and thought I should share why I made that decision. I can also source a GT2560 from Turbo Dynamics 20 minutes down the road from me in Christchurch for £576 inc VAT I haven't asked them about a group buy.

What I was looking to do is ship the kits with the price of Just the turbo + $100USD listed as I am getting them for a cheaper price than in the UK. This would help on duty and VAT for the rest of the kit leaving the bottomline total relatively small. Just trying to help out as best I can to ge the best prices.

Paul.P wrote:Hi Marie, me & Dico we're talking & just wondered if you could clarify something for us, are you running your engine with the 550 injectors, 3 bar map sensor, & the standard ECU with a MBC, & NOT using a different chip ( ESM or other ), it appears that way from your project thread ?. Also, i see Ekapol has a one off chip from ESM which he runs in conjuntion with the everest chip, is this the sort of chip we're asking Alan to replicate as a group buy ?.
Sorry for all the questions, just trying to understand it all :?

Many thanks, Paul.P

Good question. Currently I am running 550cc injectors, 3bar MAP sensor, a Greddy Electronic boost controller and the stock ECU without any chip. Ekapol is running the same setup with one exception. He has a custom chip from ESM that limits boost to 18PSI as a safegaurd from catostrophic damage + the still in place "superchip". He does not ues the everst chip anymore as it was surplantd by the custom ESM one. Boost for both of our cars is controlled by an EBC, not an MBC. Difference being that we can set an overboost letoff, yet another safegaurd and control to ensure a happy engine.

The reason for us asking ESM to develope a chip is that both Ekapol and I have noticed something in driving and tuning. At around 5 PSI the ECU still thinks that the engine is in vaccuum and is advancing the timing causing knock. As soon as you get to 8-10 PSI it goes away because the ECU thinks the engine has now been in boost and is pulling timing out of the engine. This is an issue. The ignition timing is off and therefore a new curve needs to be set. As a bandaide I set both ekapol's and my base timing fairly retarded to compensate. This does solve the problem but off the line power is only OK. better than stock and still more powerful in the top end than the everest but still not the curve I would like.

If you are using the stock 2 bar MAP and injectors with an everst you will see and feel a difference in performance as this turbo does spool much faster. After all it is ball bearing and has a larger compressor. Its only when you want to go crazy on the power that little things start popping up. This is why we asked Alan to help develope a chip.

No, we haven't ordered anything yet.

I have a lot of my Ebay customers in UK and EU countries but have not much clue about tax & tariff for autoparts at all.

Please PM me if you know tips that might help you with the import duty. I'll ask around what I can do for this (combine/separate shipping, etc.)

It would seem that 5 out of 6 purchasers of the turbo are in the UK, I personally would rather a UK warranty and for the cost difference once everything is taken into account I think it's a no brainer.

The only question is what will this do to the price MattRI has to pay for a turbo? I'd be willing to add in a few extra pennies to the cost to offset any significant impact.

Ekapol, the best way to reduce liability for import tax is to reduce the declared value of the parts... this would be easy enough to do for the fabricated parts as the tax man won't have any way to benchmark the cost, however with a turbo, they can simply check the internet or local suppliers if they feel the value has been excessively underestimated.

The downside of reducing the declared value is if anything were damaged or lost in transit then the maximum (if your lucky) the insurance would pay out is going to be the value you declared - in most cases though couriers insurance will only cover a fairly low amount, for DHL when I sent wilwoods to Canada the maximum insurance would have been for $100.

Nige, do these UK turbos come with the 12psi wastegate?

Ailwyn, I don't know about the wastegate pressure on Turbos sourced in the UK but don't see why that couldn't be specified as 12 PSI rather than 6, I'll ask.

I agree with your point about declared values, the fabricated parts will be dificult to benchmark (unless the customs and tax man has a log in here  ) where as the turbo is a stock part and the price is easily determined.

Its been confirmed via Paul Watkins that turbos from the UK source can be supplied with a 12PSI wastegate.
