Looks like with postage and duty this could exceed £150... a bit too pricey for me, but I'll have a think about it... out for the moment though.

Going back to the water level monitoring issue...It is eesential to be able to monitor he engine temp more effectively than the Elan does at the moment.
If you loose the water through a sudden failure of a coolant pipe etc then the temp gauge still sits at a low value as it has no hot water to measure!!!
By the time it heats up from the metal around its casing the engine is screwed!
Has it been mentioned elsewhere about the idea of just seeing if an off the shelf expansion tank cap fits....the type that has a built in coolant level switch?
Plus, I have put together a kit that monitors the cylinder head temp and sets off a sounder and flashing led if the temp goes too high- I posted a while back but to deaf ears!
this would help if......
1. There was an airlock in the water.
2. there was water loss sudenly, coolant pipe failure, coolant pipe connection failure, coroded metal pipe sections of the coolant system or radiator failure.
3. there was a water pump failure.
4. there was a HGF.
5. there was a fan failure
6. there was a fan temp switch failure or assocated wiring.
7. there was a situation where someone forgot to put the water filler cap back on!! (might happen..oops! te-he!).

Mikey, we obviously have similar concerns. I missed your head temperature monitor I'm afraid - any chance of you pointing me in the right direction? I have been thinking about this and have some ideas which would be worth discussing (but so little time to work on them) , so I suggest we split these last few posts off into another thread so we don't complicate the bling-bottle thread any more.

New thread started for
ElanFan related discussion as I don't have permission to split this thread.
TD, if we can't find a coolant level sensor solution for the colostomy bag that's currently used, I'd be interested in a bling-bottle.

at the rate things are moving, it may be 6 months before we have enough takers to make a production run.

A production run? Like this?

I am puzzled why you have gone through so many tanks. It does not sound like a common problem. Have you modifed anything nearby or with your cooling system?

Ekkers, are you getting your tanks from Dave Bean? Smaug had just been fitted with one before I bought him; it split as shown in my hose-replacement thread. I wonder if there's a batch of bad replacement tanks here in the US.

Yes, they are pretty close to Big Gulp cups.... sad but true
Yes, Tigerdog, I got them from Dave Bean. I'm their favorite customer when it comes to Elan tank for some reason.
The factory tank has this vertical bracing line on the inside. They are not there in the newer lot. Apparently somebody decided that they don't need this vertical bracing line and might make it smoother on the inside ..... and just got rid of it. This is why the newer tanks are much weaker than those coming out from the factory 17 years ago. --- more details discussed in Stripeless Stripey Gallery thread.

Have they been charging you full price for every one or replacing them out of a sense of honour?

Perhaps they bought-up the very old stock (pre-reinforcing rib)? Seems more likely?

Well, I'd be up for one with all the bells and whistles that have been previously described. Some form of visual indicator (strip of glass in the tank, etc.) and a low water level sensor.
