Well, I'd be up for one with all the bells and whistles that have been previously described. Some form of visual indicator (strip of glass in the tank, etc.) and a low water level sensor.

Me also, if this bit of bling could incorprate the extras.

If you wish an indicator i'd do the sensor not the glass. Both is not only overkill but a great source source for leaks. The sightglass would also be a really hard install as there isn't alot of room to place it.

you could use the circuit and indicator for the windshield washer fluid low for the coolant tank sensor

Yes, but you can't see a warning light when you're under the hood or when the car's off. I'd prefer both - if it doesn't leak

Guys, I think we are talking about boiling a piece of electronic circuit there. It will be all well-done even before you even take it out for the first testdrive, unless you use military specs, high heat resistance stuff there... I don't know but it will never come cheap.

We are talking about the coolant tank with high temp in the engine bay here, not a washer tank in the trunk.

I don't think I'm willing to pay for a tank that will run closer to $500 with the tendency to crack/ shatter the glass parts when the temp extremely change from one end to the other. BTW that budget will go to few new hood trims from Lotus

The temp gauge might be a little harder to notice than a warning light, but that's what it's for.

I'd be up for one. Though I do like the look of the clear plastic, why can't we get it made as stock, just better? Luckily I have not had any problems. Currently I'm replacing a leaking radiator, with an alunimum one, and I've got the Quaife LSD to install.

We may be running out of luck; Ekkers has already had an off-the-shelf tank customized by LGM and we were nowhere near the 10 unit minimum required by the suppliers with whom I've talked. I'll keep the thread active; maybe there'll be a rash of failures as tanks age.

You can loose coolant for a whole host of reasons and not notice while you're driving. With the possible link between low coolant and HGF, I'm after anything that will give me an early indication.

I was tempting fate I guess: After leaving Hethel last weekend, my heater valve fell apart and dumped a gallon of coolant on the road. If we hadn't have been stuck in a queue to get out of the factory, I may well have missed it as I'd been watching the gauge heading towards ¾ and was waited for the fans to kick in - they didn't and there were no signs or indication of what had happened to me or Sarah and the kids who were following. As I pulled in, the gauge was on its way back down again as there was obviously insufficient coolant at the sensor. I shudder to think what might have happened if I hadn't seen it.

Be warned these things are as rare as hens teeth now, not a Lotus nor Vauxhall dealer in the country with one and most scrappies laugh when you ask them if they have a Nova in - they don't even think they're worth keeping for scrap!

I'd be very keen to learn whether this round tank would even fit in the Elan. Could be they took advantage of unused space in the Nova, space that doesn't exist in our cars. Has anyone fitted one?

The circular Bailey tank in the photo is mine... it'll fit better if I drill a second hole in the tank flange or make some modifications to the mounting bracket.
I'd actually prefer a transparent plastic version, though - hard to see the level in a metal one.

I agree and this was mentioned some time ago in past posts about custom overfolow tanks. Yes, there are indicators on your dash to tell you if you have a coolant issue but seeing the level visually helps you deal with a potential problem before it becomes an actual problem.

I'd be interested in a decent replacement tank - mine has not inspired confidence since I lost ( ) the original black filler cap and replaced it with a new yellow one. The new design yellow cap just seems to have a slightly larger diameter so is prone to stripping the threads - especially when it's warm!

As others have mentioned, some sort of low level sensor would be good - I'm sure that would be easy to fit to a custom metal replacement.

Alternatively, has anyone got a supply of the original black caps? I'd be up for one!
