Anyone else from the US want one besides Andrew? Maybe we can save a bit on shipping having them sent together? I'd like one as well.

middle of thread hi-jacking alert!!!!!!!!!

went for a little "run out" today

got the shoe up to 135(indicated), obviously on a private airfield i own

had a think about 0-60 timings so did one with the missus stopwatching me and got a time of roughly 7 seconds, so not particularily worried about having a turbo/intercooler leak problem.
I'll still be trying to get my wheel arch liners off tho to see if i can secure the pipework to stop it clanging ready for when i have the new grommet

END OF HI-JACK

now i have one, i just want to keep tinkering with it!!!!!!!

While I was out this morning I went in search of a telescopic alternative to a flat grommet. The nearest thing they had in Halfords was a BK 5996 CV joint gaiter at £6.99. While it looked the part, I didn’t have any exact measurements with me. I went to the AA Autocentre next door hoping to get an old one to try. In the event I came out with a new universal variety, which was cheaper and had more diameter options, I think.

Removing the old grommet, the hole is 3.25” and the tube is 2”. While I have only cut the top off the gaiter, it is possible that cutting the two bottom sections off it may look even better. I chose not to do this as the next one up is only 3” OD although the next bellow being 3.5”, might cover the hole.

A couple more observations – take the rubber pipe off the throttle body first - the tube hardly moves – leaving the bottom sections on, the inner wing is properly sealed – the clip on the new gaiter is unnecessary - someone might find a gaiter with a 3.25” outer diameter – the BK 5996 at Halfords might be perfect, it needs measuring – the universal one is marked Rhino Rubber Ltd.

I intended putting two pictures on but failed so far....

Thank you for going to the trouble with the SJS order but I'll stick with the CV joint gaiter for now.

And here's the second picture...

interesting option there from Ray.

anyone got any ideas against using a CV boot vs the SJs item?

end of the day all it does is stop the gap between the chasis and the tube
now i have one, i just want to keep tinkering with it!!!!!!!

Thats great innit!

I get this far and then someone chucks a spanner in the hat! I suppose it wouldn't be LEC without it! :-D

Seriously though, I'm glad you found something you're happy with Ray, and i appreciate micks sentiments that 'it only fills a gap', but i think that the grommet looks better than the boot (IMO) for a similar price. If there were only Lotus £20 ones about, i'd take another look at 'alternatives', but Mark (paza1) has tried the SJ one and it looks okay.
