Cheap Elan sought

Postby sidewinder » Sun 06.08.2017, 09:02

Looking for an Elan to tinker with and refurbish. I have £3k to spend on the base car. Something like the recently sold "Kermit". Would be ideal.
Thanks

Hi, & welcome to LEC.

Whilst such cars were freely available about 5 or 6 years ago, many of the 'cheaper' ones have either been restored or broken for spares...

.... as you have seen (with kermit), they do still appear ocassionally - beware of buying one with unknown history unless you are happy to accept that it may need everything doing to it, including bits which are very hard to get hold of.

Where do you live? How far are you prepared to travel to find one? Do you want one that starts/drives, fully drivable with MOT, or to be taken on a trailer? Cosmetic or mechanical improvements needed? DIY or pay someone?

(I'm sure that Clemo will be along shortly to tell you about a red one which has been in storage for a while, recently re-commissioned, new MOT (after various necessary work)... good useable example, but needs a bit of fettling and continued improvement.)
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually.....

go on - click this link - you know you want to!

Holla sindwinder ...

Welcome to LEC a mind of information of all things Elan and a stack of other nonsense to !.
As you may well have noticed and as pinky has mentioned the lower end cars are becoming few and far between due to the higher end cars requiring spare parts .

That said i have a red SE , J reg car that has had replacement rear wish bones , front caliper overhaul , new brake lines , new brake master cylinder , replacement rear SJ hand brake cables , full flush of all fluids , Its been dry stored for 7 years and is back on the road with an MOT .. it has plaid cloth seats , 130k miles with some service history . Its a good road going rolling project car . As per most lower end cars it need a front end blow over and a few quid chucking at it to tidy up but its a good solid base car .

at 3k this is where i would say the car is .
The car will be back with me by the end of the week and then i will be able to take photos and pop them on here .
I am located in Torquay Devon .

Hi,
Thanks for the input. My dad has an Elan for years and sold it about 5 years ago. I have an Elise but fancy an Elan to keep it company.
I'm happy to wait until the Autumn and hopefully pick one up when the prices drop but it's always good to ask incase there is someone looking to do a deal or for a hassle free sale.
I'm in Scotland near Glasgow so will probably have to travel.
Thanks

Stephen

It's the right price but you will need to do quite a bit of work :?

Its a strange car that one .
Nice colour , decent rear screen service history BUT .....
Why isn't the garage doing it up . They know their way round elans . The have sold some pretty nice ones recently . At the price it looks like a bargain .

Then there is the aqua blue one that sat out in the elements with no rear window and a broken windscreen .. Now sells at somewhere near 5K ...

Then we had the Q plate not allowed on the road with replacement van rear lights at 3k .

Its all over the place .

All things sell for what they are worth.
If they don't sell, they are overpriced.

'Kermit' might be up for sale again shortly. Admittedly with a couple of the extras it was wearing removed and replaced with standard items.

But the price will be dramatically reduced also........

Whist i agree with you posting , Lower priced cars are selling as a cheap fun toy .
When you put £8k into it then its not bought on a whim

I've just put one of mine up for sale on eBay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172841064447? ... 1555.l2649
It's certainly starting cheap but I guess it will find it's own value.
As far as I'm concerned, it makes what it makes - I just need the space.
There's a project thread all about it here:
viewtopic.php?f=49&t=23017
With a respray and eventually a clutch it could be a very good car.
Striking fear into the hearts of duplicate posts everywhere...! :P
