Mick,

The reason I asked about the heater was that, if the thermostat is permanently stuck open, the coolant will generally be on the cool side and therefore the heater runs cooler. I know the Elan heater is not the best there has ever been, but if your coolant is only 60°C rather than 85°C, the heater will be piss poor.

I reckon if you change the thermostat, you'll cure the variable tickover AND improve your heater.

I might have a bash at my thermostat too - didn't I read somewhere (possibly in the "Part Cross-Reference" section) that it's an off-the-shelf item shared with another common vehicle?

Edit: Found it here!

What, you mean the gasket for a thermostat housing? Oh I never buy those - just get a sheet of gasket paper, trace round the housing and cut to fit. Maybe use a light smear of Hermetite or Blue Hylomar. It's never let me down yet.

correct me if Im wrong but could the low heater temperature be down to a dodgy water pump if the fins have corroded on the pump the water from the engine probably wouldn't even get to heater?

The Halfords jobbie (HTK602) - which fits the M100 - has five gaskets included with it - one of them fits perfectly.

Cheers
