Changing outer CV boot

Postby Oliver » Tue 20.02.2007, 19:24

Hello,

I have a leaking outer o/s cv boot and am going to replace it. I have managed to get the lower balljoint nut undone but am struggling to undo the driveshaft retaining nut: it`s ****ing tight. I have used a breaker bar across the wheel studs and have only succeeded in bending the studs!

I think i will drop the car back on the ground and try undoing the nut through the centre wheel hole. Does this seem sensible ?

Also, when i have finally got to the shaft end, how do i remove the outer joint? Is it on an internal circlip and do you just hit it outward?

Any help gratefully received

Oliver, I had trouble undoing my hub nut when i recently changed the outer cv gaiter.

I broke a socket bar! :( , then tried one of those impact drivers, but it still wouldn't budge.

In the end, I replaced the wheel and drove down to the local garage. They used their air compression drill/driver thing on it....came off in no time! They then replaced it and hand tightened it. Returned home and carried on with the job!

Wish I'd gone to the garage in the first place. i wasted so much time trying different ways myself!

Thanks Paul,

Got the nut off, now struggling to remove the outer joint, i am now going to try fitting a renault (motrio) universal gaiter by stretching it over the joint in situ ! i`m collecting the tool Sat am and i`ll let you know how i get on.

Oliver,
just a tip mate.
Pass the boot over the cone a number of times (5 or 6) to introduce some flexibility into the smaller diameter opening. Also warm it up a tad(i popped mine into the oven for a little while) and use plenty of lubricant on the cone. Even after doing this, it was still a bit of a bugger!

I cut my cone down to the diameter of the cv joint, but i guess you will not be able to do this if you are borrowing it off someone. :? This may make it a bit more difficult. It was hard enough to stretch it to the diameter I needed, it would of been worse to stretch it even more!

Take a couple of patience pills before you start :-D

Oh, and remember to turn the boot inside out if it is the outer joint you are doing.

Cheers, Paul

A bowl of hot water from the kettle is good to warm up the boot to start with, and (as long as you're careful not to wash all the grease away) you can keep it flexible by gently pouring it over the boot during fitting.

Hi chaps,

Just succeeded in changing the boot, used my motrio (renault) cone tool. I was surprised that it wasn`t too difficult to change. Just greased up the cone and it went on not too bad.

Bodged it a bit i suppose as i secured it with cable ties but it seems secure.

have just done mine .
the tool caused the boot to tear so i removed the outter cv and did it that way.
i used an astra cv boot but it was a little lose for my taste .
i had a used boot from my r reg caddy van to hand that was a better fit.
so if u go for it use outter cv boots from a rreg caddy van for best results
