Can somebody please take a little bit of time to remind me what the sequence is for jacking up/dropping down the engine and gearbox to facilitate access to the mounting bolts please?

Sorry to hear about the Mrs, I hope she's recuperating well. You need to spend some time with her and not wasting your efforts on here, mate.
I haven't had any luck finding Clemo's write-up - ca anyone else try please?

Hi Sy,
If it is simply removing the engine you are after, then I don't recall any special tricks. I used a hoist and just undid everything, then lifted it out. As it comes out, the aperture is quite small so the PAS pump has to come off and you need an assistant to help you achieve a slight lean on the engine to get it out.
The cambelt end is easy to undo, the front gearbox mount has to be removed and the rear arm has to be firstly undone then the alloy part loosened IIRC. These obviously have to be done once you've taken the weight of the engine, so working underneath requires an amount of care!
Have you managed to undo the oil cooler lines? I seem to remember having to borrow a second 22mm spanner for this and buy a set of crow's feet spanners!

Thanks for the feedback and input. No we haven't got to the oil cooler lines yet - sounds like fun.
Off to search Google for what you mean by crow's feet spanners, now...

Not seen these before - they're a bit pricey. I don't suppose you know what size is needed do you? As buying a set could bankrupt me!

Sy all you need is one open ended 22mm spanner and a 22mm multi point ring spanner and cut a half inch piece out of the ring with a disc cutter to accommodate the pipe or two ring spanners cut would possibly be better I used Halfords own make when I done the job

will call you ..
and bore you to death...
you know its much easier to remove an engine if you don't have a turbo in the way..

from what i can remember...
its a 16 and 17 mm for the rear engine mount .. so don't get confused when reaching all the way through the wheel arch to get this bolt of and it seems not to be working..
i had to use 3 extention bars and a swivel hip on it .
getting the earth lead of the alternator is fiddly...
breaking the half shaft was difficult..
remove the speedo cable early.. (from the top )in the engine side.
put atrolly jack with a thin piece of wood to spread the load under the rear (bulkhead side) of the engine ..
this will aid in the removal. together with the engine hoist the engine must be removed slowley with a degree of angle towards the nose..
this stops you ripping of the rear sensor.
also on refit try to achive the same angle or you will scratch the paint of the slam panel or worst still scratch the nose...
the trolly jack at this point is essential. as lining up the engine mount points (3) and half shalf and dummy shalft takes some doing...
i got it on the 3rd attempt...
also cables running along side the rear engine mount (bulkhead) will keep getting in the way. gaffer tape them out the way as they can get crushed...
it is quite a simple 2 man operation.. the rear mount being the most difficult.. the lining up being the second...
obviously these bolts have not been removed in years so a freeing spray is well worth using the day before...
as i am a div a will send sy some pictures for him to post along side this..
if anyone is doing this project and needs telephone assistance then call me .. i am only to please to help...
i removed the engine from above .. therfore left the loger/progron on..
it can be done with the rad left in...
however if you are going this far i would definatly check the pathetic bolts that hold the radiator frame and TOWING EYE on... especially at the top (underneath where the bonnet stay locator is) these will be rusted to death... god forbid we ever attempt to tow our cars on them....

Thanks for these tips boys.
In the end two 22m combination spanners worked fine.
The engine is in and today we're going to fill her up with water, reconnect the battery, bleed the PAS system and try to crank her over - fingers crossed time.
