don't beat yourself up over it Sy it could have happened to anyone from the sound of it. Fully appreciate your reasons for not participating at Donny but i think if you came along it would be better than sulking around at home. At least you could vent your spleen to people that were sympathetic. Come put on a brave face and at get yourself to Donny :smt023

Gutted for you Sy

Out of interest did you have good oil pressure on start up? If mains or big ends are knocking to this level I suspect you would see very low oil pressure.

Hard to imagine Isuzu putting it together 1 tooth out on the cams, worse still if one tooth results in such major damage. All points to someone fiddling about with the belt

Sorry if it is a bit obvious but did you do a compression check yet? Should reveal if any valves are damaged.

Stick with it - you will get there.

Need a break from mechanical woes so I've left the car with Nick Whales to rebuild the engine.

It appears that (despite the engine being sold to me as a brand-new unit), somebody had discovered the HVL and valve problem before.
Paul at Nick Whales found compressor scratches on the valve followers during disassembly yesterday.
Metal shards are prevalent in the oil too.

Post-Swap Engine Problems

Postby algirdas » Fri 16.03.2007, 16:13

Dear Sy:

I agree with Chris and the others. Go to Donny! It will be good for you. And in time, after the bills are paid and you are blasting around the "B" roads in Stripey sporting a goofy grin from ear to ear, all this will be nothing more than a speck in your rear view mirrors. Trust me-I have been there many times before.

So go to Donny and hang out with the others. Granted, LEC has the M100 as its centerpiece, but it has grown from there. It has developed friendships and respect between people all over the globe and, like it or not, you are a big part of it.

As I have said before, LEC is one of those unique constellations in life where you truly get back much, much more than you ever put in. So go to Donny and collect some of your long overdue dividends!

Sincerely,

Algirdas

Algirdas

Your kind sentiments are (as ever) most welcome.

I have just found the LEC collection tin and being as the South Wales crew have left my area (armed with poster for the stall and parts for fellow owners) for Donington, I feel it only right to deliver the aforementioned receptacle in person, tomorrow morning.

Sy,

Sh1t happens, so don't let it get you down. If you need to miss the show tomorrow, then so be it, give me a call tonight and I'll swing by with William tomorrow morning & collect whatever you need to be in Donny tomorrow.

It's easy to feel sorry for yourself when things don't go right, believe you me, I've had 2 years of it. So get ya self out of the loop, have a few beers & when you're ready to come back, we'll all be waiting for you

At the end of the day, no one died, you've still got ya health (or be it a bad back) & a loving family 8)

Speak to you soon big fella and keep ya pecka up.

send report of engine to seller and try to claim back money for being sold an item "not fit for its use".
i also find that a good way of getting money back on an ebay sale is to remind the seller that my army friends are stationed just down the road from them at tha the seller should expect a call from them...

as per engines a know..
did mine twice..
expensive operation.

Hi all

I've been away on business this week and (to be quite honest) couldn't bring myself to log on).
First of all, thanks for everyone at Donington who cheered me up and made me feel so welcome.
I could supplement this update with pictures but I just can't be arsed at the moment.

On Monday (as I was driving away from work, on my way to Norwich - where I have been all week) I got a phone call from NW asking whether I could possibly call in as they had something to show me.
#4 piston was rocking (without effort) for and aft in the chamber and the scoring inside the cylinder had to be seen to be believed. The pistons' faces were black and the alarm bells were ringing like crazy.
Next step was to drop the sump and see what was evident in the lower engine.
I left them with a 'carry on' instruction.
On driving off, I remembered that I had agreed to drop a gasket set off with them and phoned my mate (Bob - an engineer and close friend, whose garage we've used to work on the engine swap so far) to ask him to do the honours on the next (Tuesday) morning.
By the time Bob arrived the next day, the pistons were out and it all became clearer. Number 4 was missing an awful amount of metal - pictures to follow, if I can bring myself to do it).
I haven't seen the car all week, but Bob says that it's as bad a condition as he's ever seen a piston in.
Quite obviously, the inner parts of this supposed new engine have been robbed and replaced with totally shagged, used parts - hence all the problems.
NW reckoned I was looking at a £4000 bill for them to continue and rebuild the engine. Again, I stress, I apportion absolutely no blame to Nick Whales, they've been really good with me.
Bob and I discussed the situation at length, decided to retake control of the job and, on Wednesday morning (my birthday) I had to tell NW to cease work.
Tomorrow, I'll drop the track car off its trailer and Saturday we'll go and recover Stripey and put her away in my garage pending refurbishment of one of the used spare engines. Or maybe mix and match the best conditioned engine parts.

This thread may now get parked as I really can't be bothered to start spanner bashing again, right now.

If I've missed any personal approaches on other threads, I apologise, but I'm taking a break from things Elan for a while.

Sy,

Don't forget that, even if you get nowhere with the scrote who sold you the engine, you can make a claim against the financial institution if you paid by plastic, as the goods were certainly not as advertised.

It's a ball-ache, but keep records and photographs and at least you might get your money back.

Effinell!
This sounds like a right 'mare.
The idea of mixing and matching bits is a good one though.
And although it would be a ballache, isn't the old engine still a runner that could keep Stripey going? At least until you have a pristine unit that you can transplant again.
It sounds to me as though you could be embarking upon a very similar journey to Paul Watkins. But that may not be such a bad thing - look how his turned out and the knowledge he gained in doing it.
Furthermore, if you've built it up from scratch (checking the integrity of parts as you go), you can be completely confident in the quality of the work.
Striking fear into the hearts of duplicate posts everywhere...! :P

Jay

Dico's old engine would be the obvious choice, I agree. But I have to cover some costs before moving forward.

The bill to remove my car (on a trailer with several boxes of engine bits) was just over £1K.

I have so far forked out £3.7K on a supposed new engine that's still far from serviceable and may never be. So I may have to eBaY that engine and work on Stripey's original.
