What is it,what does it do?

Postby paza1 » Sat 07.04.2007, 22:03

Fiddling about in the (UK) n/s wheel arch, with liner off (what a job!!), saw the attached component (in the middle of the picture, the one with a rubber bellows affair). I suspect it is a shock absorber, possibly. It rattles about when moved but is secured at both ends with washers and a nyloc nut (bottom end in view).
My questions are what is it and should it be "loose". I am not mechanically savvy so any info/help much appreciated.
Cheers

Its a shock absorber thingy thats stops the gearbox from being shaken to bits. Don't think it should rattle though

Thanks for the info Dico. It looks like the nut can be tightened to take up the slack...should I?

Yes, tighten it up at both ends (top and bottom) 10mm if I remember correctly.

IMHO If it's come loose..... chances are it will again....

Here's another suggestion then (WRT your "what a job" comment):
Contact Dave and get a set of these off him.
WELL worth it for next time.

Totally agree. Got the stuff from him last year and excellent quality it is. Should be a breeze next time the liners have to come off. Rear o/s done (easy, just be aware of the washer bottle is secured with two of the bolts going through for the liner fixing.). Front n/s in progress. Had to cut 2 bolts off with an angle grinder. De-rust, Kurust and Hammerite in progress.
Possibly off topic but I am having a good look around the area behind the liner partly because I will need to replace the soild brake line going from the flexible lines to a union at some point. Anyone got any hints/tips for a novice?
Cheers

Yes, get either a proper brake pipe spanner or a set of crow's-feet spanners. The union nuts will be so tightly corroded in that you'll blind the nuts trying to undo them otherwise. Start wire-brushing and applying WD-40 now as well!

Will do Candles. Thanks for the info.

Shake Damper, secondary, item 80, page 2, Engine section 40.01B. Mine rattles top and bottom fixings. Tried tightening the bottom and the bolt snapped off. Replaced with new M6 bolt and nyloc nut but doesn't seem to want to tighten enough to stop the assembly rattling.

Questions....what torque?
could the spigot be worn so the spacing is is wrong :smt102

Sy, correct, 10mm nut and bolt M6.

Any help/info for a numpty appreciated

I am not sure that the nut will tighten any further because it presses against the spigot (which seems to act as a spacer). Can someone have a quick check on theirs sometime please? You can access it from above.

There is a spacer, but IIRC the Federal ones and later UK ones are different set-ups, slightly.

Judging by the condition of the nuts and bolts, I would say that they are the original set up so will be UK fit
