Gareth,

The timing and idler kit doesn't look too bad, although the picture is a bit small so I can't tell properly.
I found some new boxed Lotus items at Donington and could take pics of them annd send them to you if that's any help.
The top water pump on that page also looks good.

Have you had any further luck with the manuals? I've not managed to get them copied onto CD (yet) but I think someone said they would be sending Sy a set anyway.
Also I believe there's only on f in Geof Smith has a (possible) solution involving online uploading, which you may wish to discuss with him.

Gareth,

The timing belt kit is the same part number that i have just fitted to mine, and i went for the GMB water pump.
The reasons for this was that it is the original OE fittment (and they didn't have the other ones in stock anyway!)

It may be worth shopping arround at www.rockauto.com as they list the timing belt kit at $40.79 with water pumps from about $25 (lots of choice), Gates timing belt @ $17.14

2 things to consider though - Rock auto take Paypal and will dispatch quickly, whereas PartsBin will need you to fax (not e-mail) your credit card details so they can verify your details (quite quick and easy, and only necessary for your first order) so it take a bit longer.

The other thing is that neither of these companies keeps all its stock in one place, so the shipping total may vary as you add and subtract items in the cart.

When i did a bit of a group buy last year i got one timing belt kit from Rock and the water pumps, thermostats and another timing belt kit and the belts from PartsBin. We got hit with import duties on the box from PartsBin, but not from Rock.

Both companies are extemely helpful, on the end of a phone 24/7, and a pleasure to deal with (in my experience, anyway!)

Because of the nationwide stock warehousing, if it has to come from more than one place, they will send it all to the depot in New Jersey (free), and then do the international parcel from there (paid for).

Overall, i only saved a couple of bucks by using 2 companies, next time I probably won't bother. It is still a hell of a saving over UK prices though!!!!

PS - a head set (including stem seals) is $132.79, just the head gasket comes in at $36.89.

Edit:- I've just noticed that they are listing ignition coils at just over $20 each as well! - can anyone confirm they will fit an elan????

Gareth,

The DAYCO part is for both tensioner and idler, the GATES one is just the tensioner.

As for the water pump - you pays yer money and takes yer chance!

I believe kmckmc has used the really cheap CARDONE before with good results, but personally i'd rather spend a bit more (by the time shipping is added in, there isn't much difference anyway)

Likewise with the belts, i would always go for GATES if possible (although there is nothing wrong with any of the well-known makes).

right then
I'm ordering

Engine : Timing Belt
GATES Part # T169 {Automotive Timing Belt 1" x 50 3/32" (159 Teeth)}
Interference engine application $17.14

Cooling System : Water Pump
BECK/ARNLEY Part # 1312115 $47.79

Cooling System : Water Pump Gasket
BECK/ARNLEY Part # 0394100
Water Pump Gasket, 1 Per Car $2.00

Engine : Timing Idler
GATES Part # T42001 {Timing Belt Pulley Steel Smooth (60mm x 10.4mm x 31mm)} $48.79

Engine : Timing Belt Tensioner
GATES Part # T41027 {Timing Belt Tensioner Steel Smooth (60mm x 10.5mm x 30.5mm)} $52.79

the thing that confused me most was the beck tensioner pulley as you had one 'lft' and one 'right'.....so Ive gone for the gates bit (these are apparently a good make) and a beck/arnley water pump

what do we think???
cheers

Read my post up the page a bit!!!!

Gareth,
I see no problem with your selection, other than a couple of minor observations - does the water pump not already have a gasket in the box? (mine did!)
The GATES pulleys are quite a bit more than the DAYCO ones (DAYCO were original suppliers to ISUZU) - are they likely to be any better?

Good luck with the project!

well......its arrived back today
been out in it....not pushing it at all really....just gonna try to get 500 miles in before I tighten the head bolts for the third time (its already been run once and then tightened)
just looking over things generally.....pressure at start seems a bit more than what it was.....about the 5-6.5 mark until warm an now only drops to 3 at idle and 5.5 under load.......but the more I drove it today the more it seemed to come back into line with what it used to run 2 at idle and 5 under load
also the tick over at times seemed to be around 1500rpm.....didnt correct itself until after an hour/half an hour of driving.....
other than that its all good......
new belt, water pump, tensioner, idler, gasket etc etc etc etc......so I'll be trying to get 500 miles in before next weekend and the trip to the lakes...just to make sure mi nuts are tight :-D
would a change in oil spec change the oil pressure do we think????.....
cheers
G :-D

Well done Gareth. You've been a bit quiet during this project.
Sounds like it's gone pretty well - did you DIY?
Much to report in the way of doing the job itself?

I think a heavier oil would up the pressure.
But possibly at the expense of main/big-end and turbo bearing life, as well as rings & bores. You might even end up with noisier HVL's.
