Sy,

I've only just re-read this thread - from 14th March on - as I've been away.

Gutted for you, mate. Hope you can work out some options to move the project forward at not too much cost / hassle. Let me know if I can help in any way- I've plenty of time on my hands at present ;)

Best regards

Hey guys

Thanks for your concerns, but I'd rather save the charity appeals until I eventually lose my marbles altogether, which, if this run of luck continues, probably won't be too long...

Look at the bright side, will you? If you lose your marbles, then you'll be just like the rest of us!

That's what worries me!

Very sincerely,

Dear Gareth:

Bummer dude. Whatever you do, make sure the wife does not blow a head gasket because those are REALLY expensive to fix. They make Sy's problems look like nothing more than a pebble in one's shoe.

Sincerely,

How about we arrange for a collective intervention with an "engine swap makeover" -- we all descend on the farm with tools and ales and get Stripey back running in 1 or 2 days !!! To bad I am too far away or I may try to arrange such fun :-D

I'd be up for that too. I even have a few spare bits that Sy gave me in the first place which could be returned to help.

Last w/e we set out doing an appraisal of what options we had and decided to fit one of my spare engines with as many of the newer ancillaries that I have - this was the quickest option to give me an Elan to drive.
I wanted to put the new (freshly ported) turbo on it, but on removing its original standard turbo we discovered at least three quarters of an inch of engine oil sitting in the exhaust manifold immediately behind the turbo.

Question now is, has it come from the turbo or from the engine?

Ideas?

Welcome back, Sy!!

you're saying there's oil in the exhaust manifold itslef?? I can't see how a running engine can get liquid oil into that area :smt017

I guess it could have leaked from the turbo?? while it sat??

do you have a picture of the area?

Doug

I could take pictures, but it won't surprise you to hear that we soaked all the oil out with a wadge of paper towels.

I agree (I think) that any oil in that area should have been through a failure of some oil seal or suchlike on the turbo.

But, given my recent luck, I hope you can excuse my cautiousness. My confidence and trust in any unknown entities has been pretty much shot to pieces of late...

wonder what others think, but I just can't see how you'd get such standing oil there coming from the engine (except running out thru a cracked head or such severe thing).

Sy,

It`s good to see u trying to get back on track with the engine problems, but the oil doesn`t sound good, i`m sure PM could tell u more but it`s possible that the oil seal has shrunk because the turbo has never been used (presume it`s the one of the new engine) and hence the oil. :?

or since the head gasket wasn`t changed on the new engine maybe that failed and oil got in to the combustuion chamber and then pushed out through the exhaust valve into the manifold :? All guess work
