We've made the final reservations on the Newcastle Ferry

We intend doing a lot of :rally:

again. Including stop overs at the Tallisker and Laphroaig distilleries on Islay, The Applecross (of course!!!), on Skye, in the Highlands and in the Crampian mountains with a probable finish in Edinburgh before heading back to the ferry in Newcastle.

We're hoping to meet a some of you guys again :gathering:

to enjoy a lot of of beers and/or malts together

Not that I know about, but we can arrange one I'm sure.

You & Kitty are welcome to stay with us if you like (we now have a spare room), and BigErch has a lovely hotel near Balmoral which we can give you details of - I'm sure he would welcome another Elan. We could drive you out to show you where it is (it's not too far from the Royal Lochnagar distillery).

Anybody else fancy June in the Grampians?

We enjoyed the warm welcome with you and your family very much as well as the drive we did together to the Royal Lochnagar last time we were in Scotland

Kitty and I would love to visit you again and also find out about the hotel that the BigErch runs.

We think that the Crampians are a region where there is more to explore and are more fine roads to drive then the few we managed last time around.

Our kids' school holidays start on 5th July, so we'll be here until then. You're welcome to stay. Let us know some dates nearer the time when you have sorted out your itinery.

By now we are very busy working out the itinery.
The plan is to make only two reservations in advance. In Applecross (before or after visiting Skye) and, following your previous suggestion, we stay in the Travelodge in Edinburgh the last two nights before heading back to the ferry in Newcastle.

Question.
Is it very busy with tourists at the end of june or can we expect quiet roads and towns?

In the tropics some mosquitos are effectively kept away when someone consumes vitamine B-1.
Is there any knowledge about the Scottish midges disliking vitamine B-1 scent?

Only really a pain on the West coast Michael, although the little buggers also fly East to annoy us !! They like damp, windless conditions (hence the West coast) so avoid rivers and under trees etc... You will encounter them in full force on Skye at Talisker - I have known people to go mad with scratching at Loch Coruisk, Glen Brittle and Sligachan.

There are many proprietary lotions and potions to buy and fend them off. One of the better ones is Jungle Formula which contains DET or DEET (diethyl toluamide) This is a fairly foul smelling chemical - do not get on your lips as it has a numbing effect !!

Another product, allegedly used by our Marines on active duty, is Skin so Soft by Avon. Smells nice and moisturises the skin and does seem to have a positive benefit.

My experiences are that they prefer females to males, probably because they are less hairy and the skin is softer. I have this personal theory that it is also due to oestrogen levels and pheromones - females usually smell nicer than males so avoid perfumes and after shaves etc..

Finally, I think that it is only the female, pregnant midge that bites and gets blood to support the young. However, I stand to be corrected on that one.

I'm sure JohnW is probably a midge expert and has some other ideas - a 15% solution of donkey shite and seawater, cow muck and joghurt etc..... Cue John

Skin so Soft by Avon is the only thing that works. Our Forestry comission and troops use it. But you need the spray on from the green bottle, not the purple/pink bottle.

Also a diet containing chili and garlic keeps them away, must be the smell from the skin that puts them off.

I'm from the west coast, but haven't really been too bothered by midges. Some people just seem to attract them. My grandfather advocated smoking a pipe to keep them away. If they are really bad, you can buy hats with veils to prevent them getting at your face & neck - sounds a bit over the top to me.

Just hope for fine dry weather with a light breeze. :-D

Will be at the Moffat car rally on the Sat/Sun or failing that at the Rothiemurchus music festival (Crowded House, KT Tunstall etc....) so may be up your way. Will give you a bell a bit nearer the time if I can make it. Are you sacrificing one of those plump chickens for the BBQ ?
