Glovebox latch & lock

Postby Abington » Sun 29.04.2007, 15:04

Does anyone know anything about locking glovebox latches. I have one but have no key. I am told that locking latches are no longer available so I wouldlike to get a key for the one I have but what are they like? There are a GM numbers on both parts of the latch. Do these perhaps indicate not only part numbers but also a key number. Or is that too much to hope for?

Is it possible to remove the lock from the plastic latch so that it can be dismantled?

I suppose if all this fails to bring up any satisfactory answers I should ask if anyone has a secondhand item or whether anyone knows if it is possible to buy a replacement from Vauxhall or GM?

Abington.

I took mine to a local locksmith who removed the barrel, fitted new 'sliders' & cut me a couple of matching keys for around £15 to £18.

So if you can't find anyone local & you're willing to pay the price, then I could always drop yours in, failing that you could post it to them directly.

on reading the above...I might have got the wrong end of the stick....
anyway here goes......
yes.....
its a sort of backplate/square circlip thing.....
if you drop the door you will see the back of the lock......surrounding the lock fluch with the rear of the door is what appears to be a plate....
its not its a sort of clip....you sould slide this to the left IIRC......
once youve slid this off the whole lock just drops out......

its a vauxhall carlton glove box latch so try your local scrapper...
or go to vauxhall and ask for part number 90272984
theyre about £30 incl keys etc.......

cheers

If you want a new glovebox complete latch/lock and two keys for your Elan then phone Bridge Vauxhall 01386 768400 (Evesham, Worcs, UK) and ask for part number 90272984. It's £40 including VAT and it took a week to come from Germany. 8)

The glove lock on my 92 elan was the same as the 92 carlton with matching part no.
the local scrap yards charge £5. Save yourselves from being riped off.

I am looking at an Elan where the outer latch is missing from the glovebox. I can trigger the mechanism, but it's exposed and unsightly. I've read there's a Vauxhall latch that is identical. Does anybody have a recommendation on where I can get a used or new replacement?

You can still buy the lock mechanism from Bridge for 45 pound. Shipping is 40 pound to the states (California) A bit pricey!

If you're ever after stuff from the UK which has a rip-off postal charge, it is worth asking on LEC first, as there are usually plenty of people who will volunteer to send items over at cost only.

Sorry but a slight although similar thread deviation....what about the centre consul cubby box latch, are these still available? Mine is missing, not that it is much trouble, just annoying it's not there!
