Ever since I put an aftermarket gear knob in, it would (after time) work loose. Probably because it never matched the OEM thread of the gearstick and I was just filling the knob with various sticky compounds to make do.
Well, I was out having a blast today and my knob got really loose and floppy so I headed for home (changing gears using the shaft as opposed to the knob end (leave it)) and tackled the job in earnest.
Here's are the afore-mentioned T&Ds:
Eager to keep my after market knob, I decided to take a chance and saw off the OEM threaded end of the gearstick - the threaded area is about 25mm (1") long and has a thread that I think is M12x1.25. I then used the taps and dyes to re-cut the threads inside the knob and cut a new section of thread on the shortened gearstick (both M12x1.5).
Having reassembled the gaiter and knob I thought it might be interesting to measure my thrust length (fore and aft movement):
I'm left with only 74 mm (3"), but don't feel sorry for me as it looks rather dandy and works a treat:
