Members Map

Postby al » Wed 13.06.2007, 14:05

Hey guys,

The idea of a map showing members' locations came up in another thread, so I figured I'd have a go at knocking one up (ooer).

The result is here:
http://9600.org/lec/lecmap.html

There are about 650 members with valid locations set so far !

Many thanks to Geoff who stepped up and created the member/location list in a useful format.

If you can't find yourself on the map it probably means that either your location (in your profile) hasn't been set, or it's been set to something that didn't look like an address.

If this is something that people like, we can automate the member list generation very easily and new members (or updates to existing members' locations) would appear automatically - admins, I'm looking at you ! :D

cheers,
a.

Nice work, Al! I believe the lack of pins may be browser-related, as I see them here, no trouble. Unfortunately, when I click on a pin, the balloon doesn't populate with the LEC Members info. Again, may be browser-related. Either way, great work!

And me?

Is it something that can be added to by members, or just you?

(Not being critical - it's looking good!)

Much better now! I see pushpins and get data when clicking. Seems to be a few data integrity issues (click on the pushpins in Arkansas in the US) Even so, this is just super!

Rutland was taken off the map years ago (quite rightly IMHO)!

Lucky_Dave and the Midlands appear to have been transported to Zimbabwe.

And where am I? Maybe there is a place call kitty fiddling.

Can you stick a Calypso Red pin in Haywards Heath please.
How does this work, is it coming from the database or are you entering the locations manually?

Hi guys,

sorry if it's been doing odd things over the past couple of hours, I've been fiddling around with it, still seem to be some random loading issues - sometimes it just doesn't seem to load the full member list - I'll keep playing, if you can't see lots of pins try a reload or two until I can nail down the problem.

How does this work, is it coming from the database or are you entering the locations manually?

Geoff sorted out a list of members and locations which I used initially, but it would be very easy to have the data come from the forum member list database automatically if the admins will help out.

Al, i'm not on the map ?

It's probably that your profile doesn't have a location set, or doesn't have a location which was able to be geocoded (translated to map coords) - for example - Dapinky had "Weston-super-mud" and Dave Eds had "Herts." instead of "Hertfordshire", the geocoder is a bit picky about the address format at times. :(

I added a search box at the bottom so you can check if your location is translatable - just type it in and click on "search location", if the map moves and shows you what you're after then you're in luck !

You can also search for specific member names too, same deal - type in the username and click on "Search Member".

right, I think I've sorted the loading problems, everyone with a valid location should show up now.

I don't have a copy of Internet Explorer to test with here so if it doesn't work can someone let me know ? :D
