Monty,
I see you wrote rubbish to my earlier post. The Lotus filter has a round surface to the seal and the aftermarket ones have tried have a flat surface. I have found that the one with the round bead is easier to get off than a flat bead which sticks - probably because the contact area is greatly reduced and it doesn't need to be done up as tight to seal corectly.
Doug, Ellie,
There is a lot of sience in the design of rubber seals. The lotus oil filter seal looks similar to the K&N one above .... And I quote "Internally lubricated gasket provides positive seal while allowing easy on and off of filter" from the K&N website.

Monty,
Just sharing my experience - The flat seal stuck - the Elan filter is difficult to get to.
In 3 years of Elan servicing you've changed how many filters?

Elan Factory in Melbourne has some useful info for early Elans, M100s and other Lotus models... see link
http://www.elanfactory.com.au/pdf/produ ... ilters.pdf
They also give the oil filter size as h= 82mm/3.23" ; OD 78mm/3.07" ; thread M20x1.5 metal canister.
See below - attached pdf with a filter reference list to make things easier.
Edit 18/1/08 these web pages with oil filter performance comparisons may interest some

Nobody has ever tried to put a remote oil filter kit in their Elan?
I guess it would simplify oil changes a lot

Not too sure about the sound of that. Remote=extra plumbing. Not a lot of space to start with. You would also have to pump the oil the extra distance to the filter & back again.
I'll keep my filter where it is thanks. As for burning my arm on the hot plenum:.. that's what my old worn out leather jacket is for
