Photos of Elans at LOG27

Postby tigerdog » Sat 08.09.2007, 05:09

I was browsing through photos on the official LOG27 web site and came across a few choice pix. Are any of these photos of LEC members?

All these were gleaned from autotourimages.com from whence it appears these photos may be purchased. I have no affiliation with the site. I just wanted to put faces with names and cars.

I thought I recognized the mods from Forum posts. I was also wondering if the yellow car with the Colorado plate might be Algirdas. C'mon everyone, 'fess up and identify yourselves.

A few observations.
I didn't realize how faded our paint is.
Our car came with a RH drive carpet set. I guess if we wanted mass produced cars we could have bough Porsche.
12 cars isn't a bad trun out, 2% of the all the cars imported although I had hoped for a better turn out from the left course.
Hope to see you all at LOG 29.

Paint looks quite fine to me. If you're comparing to the photo just above, note that photo is slightly under-exposed by comparison. The sky and road surface both are darker than in other pix.

Were there any BRG Elans present?

LOG 27

Postby DeanG » Thu 13.09.2007, 00:53

No green or silver cars showed up this year. The black car that is for sale looked good and being so origional I was able to check out a few things to see how the factory actually did it!

I see in EliseTalk that someone trailered their M100 to LOG. Fess up, who didn't drive their car?

The LOG 28 web site is up and running. It looks like it will have plenty of activities no matter what our particular automotive focus. My favorites will probably be the informal concourse, driving a lap of the Indianapolis speedway, and an auto-x where I don’t have to shag cones! I also enjoy factory tours so visiting Walker Racing may break into my top three. Check it out

http://www.indylotus.com/log28.swf

The video gives a particularly good overview.

For those who haven’t been to a LOG before, be forewarned. The tours set up by the LOG committees tend to be extraordinary. Scenic tours cover very special and usually lightly patrolled roads. Factory tours often provide access to the engineers and mechanics that make things happen and are not at all like the feel good marketing tours most people get. Museum tours venture off into the usually off limit areas and given by curators or restoration staff rather than docents. GO TO LOG, TAKE THE TOURS!

Was me! I was ridiculed (only initially-see below) by my fellow travelers for using a "lawn service equipment" trailer, as it was vey small, if you look at it closely compared to the other "professional grade" trailers. It weighed only 660 pounds with one axle and no trailer brakes (see Elisetalk.com and look for "Mick's LOG 27 Journal"- that report covers our group from Birmingham). You can pick the trailer up and roll it around with one hand. It's about the same size trailer as a Caterham two wheel trailer.

I used my wife's Honda Odyssey to pull the trailer and Lotus (added a trans cooler to the Honda) and it ran like a charm-70-85 MPH the entire way- approx 3,000 miles total trailer mileage from Birmingham to Colorado and back for 5 solid days of driving (20 and 1/2 hours total trailer time each way). When we arrived in Colorado, I unloaded the Lotus and left the trailer and Honda over the weekend at a Hampton Inn in Colorado Springs where we stayed on Thursday and then drove the Lotus Friday through Indpendence Pass to Aspen/Snowmass with a fellow M100, Turbo Esprit and and Exige S for another 4 1/2 hours each way in a full-out blast- the greatest mountain roads I have ever seen-probably some of the best in the world. When I first cranked her up on the trailer for unloading in CO, it was now at 8,000 feet in alltitude- the engine had a fit until the MAP sensor and ECU figured things out- then it ran like a charm after 10 seconds or so of spurtering and stumbling. We returned to Colorado Springs and loaded everything back up on Monday after the track day.

Here's why I wimped out and didn't drive the Lotus the whole way:

1) I had driven the car to Detroit/Buffalo for LOG 23, St. Louis for LOG 25 and Dallas for LOG 26 all from Birmingham, and discovered my threshold for pain lowered with each trip.

2) I have had three knee operations over the last ten years with athritis now setting in and there is not enough Advil in a bottle to help me with a 2 and 1/2 day drive out and then 2 and 1/2 day drive back, in a Lotus. The room/comfort in the Honda Odyssey resolved this problem.

3) I kept useless interstate mileage off the Lotus.

4) My approach allowed me to participate in the track day event with a back up plan to return home if I had a problem-refer to Dave Myers' report.

By the way, the other two trailers in our caravan had a Lotus 69 (driven by Emmo in his pre-FI days with Lotus), the Type II replica and a Turbo Esprit. Those trailers had a total of 7 flat tires and I HAD NONE! So, the lawn service trailer got the last laugh after all.

Regards

Mike

One of the last shots of it driving! Yep, Algirdas is #2, Mike is #3, and Dean indicated his. I think those were the only LEC folks... The other white one is a member of our Chicago Lotus Corp club. The black one is the one with 1,000 miles on it - looks like new because, well...it is! A nice car.
Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Lew,

it may be worth a new main catalytic converter--and be sure to run the cat up to proper temp before the emissions test--just having the guy start the car and put it on the sniffer is not good enough--go drive it around the block at high revs and LIGHT UP the cat and then have them sniff it and it will be a lot better--cats are truly designed for efficiency when hot!

also check the plugs and set the base timing, etc . . .

Emissions..failed

Postby lewtus » Mon 17.09.2007, 06:41

It has new plugs, wires, CAS, fuel and air filter. Checked timing, PCV valve and vacuum leaks. Added B44K Injector cleaner Amsoil Powerfoam intake cleaner too. Could be Cat since not much left except O2 sensor. Something happened recently as it passed easily past few years. Not sure if this version has CO potentiometer, check tomorrow...

Lew,

no CO pot on Federal Elans!

I think the O2 sensor and cat are your prime suspects!

I was also thinking stuck FPR as well , all plugs were even so not the injectors or wires. My buddies pre cat was taken out and it ran better emissions oddly enough...wnder how these cars do W/O a cat for CO? Be curious...looked for CO pot.....nothing there after assuming the Lotus position!

I was getting the code for CO pot adjustment in my 49 state Federal M100 for a bit. This was rather odd since the Federal cars don't use a CO pot. Supposedly the computer can't even throw the code for a misadjusted CO pot. It turned out that Criswell Lotus had mistakenly put a euro comptuer in my car. Once I got the origional computer back in the car everything worked well. Why they replaced a working computer is another story. Bad Criswell! Bad!

CO pot.

Postby lewtus » Thu 20.09.2007, 23:25

Maybe they wil try to sell a CO pot. while they are at it.!!
My car needed a new O2 sensor...and it passed. From the numbers my cat is not working but it passes without....gutted by PO?
