California sounds like a free-range prison. To quote Wiki-diki-pedia:

In the United States, possession of nitrous oxide is legal under federal law and is not subject to DEA purview. Many states have laws regulating the possession, sale, and distribution of nitrous oxide; but these are normally limited to either banning distribution to minors, or to setting an upper limit for the amount of nitrous oxide that may be sold without special license, rather than banning possession or distribution completely. In most jurisdictions, like at the federal level, sale or distribution for the purpose of human consumption is illegal.

In the United Kingdom, recreational use of nitrous oxide is illegal, though sale and possession for non-inhalant use is legal for adults over the age of 18. According to Times online, and certain other sources, laughing gas is legal in the UK, and is sold in many night clubs around the country.

You'd not want to try NOS for personal reasons, at least in the USA, as is says on the bottle something about another chemical being added which will make you throw-up! Probably not worth it unless you're feeling bulimic.

To be clear, LGM, is your car smog legal?

If I was LGM, and knew that there was a $25,000 Federal fine for knowingly tampering with a car's emmission system... as well as knowing that CARB is pretty much the only agency prosecuting people for this type of offence, my answer would be something like...

"It certainly was hard grafting the letters GARRETT onto the IHI turbo."

Technically everyone with an ESM chip is also in violation of these same laws as ESM avoided the couple-years and $200,000 it would have taken to obtain CARB certification for the part to be sold in California.

My thinking is, I've never noticed an EPA or CARB agent in the privacy of my garage. Other than that, I know n-o-t-h-i-n-g about what goes on under that engine-cover thing. Is the Elan's motor in the front or the back?

Correct. After all I'm a dirty blonde. I don't actually know anything about cars.  It's hard enough not to break a nail when putting in gas in the fuel thingy.

I think Angie has that problem - so she leaves it empty for me to fill up

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

Final output power will be similar if not slightly greater due to less lag and cooler intake temps due to the larger compressor wheel. On the other hand, should anyone wish to upgrade injectors and remap the ECU much greater powe levels can be achived.

Marie,

I know yourself & Ekapol now have the Garrat turbo fitted, how does it compare to the stock performance?

Any ideas on how much the kit will cost without the turbo? and what will the kit consist off. Just considering i may want to do this upgrade in the future for when my turbo goes pop :?

Maybe it might be worth starting a new thread to see who else is interested :?

I wasn't really planning on building a kit. What I can do is list the componnents that I used to make the turbo work. As far as a down pipe goes.... I will be building a spare unit for a jig and to get ceramic coated. Hopefully afte I'm done with training here in Utah. we'll see what happens

Marie thanks for u`r reply, don`t blame u on not doing kits & group buys as it takes up your time. It`s just that over here we struggle to find someone to do these type of mods/fabrication  If u decide to sell the spare down pipe i could be interested, just let me know a price

A list off components would br great :-D

How does the new turbo compare to the old stock one?

I've always been somewhat stupified (probably, you noticed already) that the land of TVR & the McLaren F1 hasn't made many upgrade parts for the M100. Britain makes them for the Elise. You have all the Elans. What gives?

The logical thing would be for some small-time (i.e., hand-built) entrepreneur with access to an M100 to make a 'stiffy' which mates to the PECO Exhaust AND allows the AC-compressor to remain. Since it could taper down to a 2.25" termination (just like the exhaust), shouldn't that make it a touch easier to fit & fabricate?

(And just look for Chris sake, 19 exhausts are available!)

I agree with Nitro, but I'll have to say that, fortunately for you, Alan has done enough with making the ElanScan to keep you all out of my sh!t list for a while ! :-D

But as the inheritor of Houdini's handiwork, I may be able to share a couple of insights. Firstly, I can attest that boost spools up very quickly using the Garret 2560. I've only driven a few other Elans (the car formerly owned by Doc Fizzix, a mountain-chipped red one in Burbank and a beautiful white one here in San Diego. All had stock turbos and none had the immediacy of Smaug's "holy SH!!!*" power delivery.

Having said that, Smaug has another unusual feature: he's equipped with the unusual combination of
custom 2.5" exhaust (magnaflow hi-flow cat and muffler)
    Garrett 2560R
    RC Engineering 550cc injectors
    GM 3-bar MAP sensor
MBC, set to 16PSI (1.15 bar)
    stock ECU!!!

By rights, I'd expect this combination to not run at all, or run very poorly. In practice, the results appear to be fine. The car passed California smog testing well within limits (the visual portion was apparently conducted by a conveniently myopic tech.)

The boost gauge shows a full and stable 16PSI when peaked; Elanscan shows the ECU believes the engine is at .75 BAR, so the fuel cut never enters the equation. I believe the MBC is mandatory in this configuration, as the stock ECU won't cut the boost until it's much higher than we'd like.

All I can think is that the 550cc injectors flow about 30% more fuel for a given duty cycle than the originals (325? 375?), the 3 BAR MAP sensor makes the ECU think there's 30% less boost than there is and the two balance each other closely enough to let closed-loop operation take care of the difference.

Given that this combination works as well as it does, I believe it wouldn't take a huge amount of Alan's time and tuning to make a chip that could complete the "bolt-on mods" for a solid 225-250 HP while retaining the safety elements of the standard ECU.

Anyone else interested?

I've had a short PM exchange with Alan. He's willing to think on the idea but is concerned with the number of maps and parameters in the ECU that would need to be juggled. When the time is ripe, I'll start a new thread to document this. I need to fit Smaug with a new thermostat before I do any other ElanScan runs. He also needs a new timing belt - it appears, at 47,700 miles, he may still have the original!!!

Anyway, I believe we should return this thread to its original topic!

the Milage isn't bad.... the years are. 60-80K miles isn't unheard of for a timing belt replacement. This also means 6-8 years as well. If it is original then your lucky because the engine is living on borrowed time.

I"d love for a chip upgrade to compliment the turbo upgrade. It would make alot of sence to get alittle better performance and still maintaing factory usability.

Absolutely agree on both counts, Marie. Care for a working vacation in sunny San Diego? Timing belt and chip planning? :)

Kidding, of course. Harry in Costa Mesa will do the timing belt and chip planning will wait until after.

How did it go stevo? My turbo is in need of some TLC, I'm not after anything fancy just a referb.

Was going to try the place in Christchurch mentioned on here (was it turbodynamics). Any reason why you opted for turboactive over them?

Cheers.
