OK. Now that I've got everybody's attention, I may have very good news.
I just spoke to Tom at a place called Replacement Parts (very creative name). I was given their number when I visited Mississippi Rubber Company in Jackson yesterday. He is confident that they can make us replacement seals. He said that's exactly the kind of thing they do. he told me of a recent customer who needed original type tires for a very old Harley-Davidson he was restoring, and they were able to fabricate them, white-walls and all, to the original specs.
Here's what I need:
I need to send them a good set of pictures of the seals. Does anybody have a source for some good pics?
The part number would be good for me to send them, too. (Is that somewhere on the manuals disc I have?)
The best possible thing would be for me to send them an actual seal, in as good shape as possible. Does anybody out there have one that they could send to these guys? You'll get it back. PM me, or post a reply here, and I'll get you in touch with them.
I also know that we'd like them to be better than the originals, but I'm not knowledgable enough to discuss that with them. Can somebody more knowledgable than me do that?
He said if I can get them some good pics, or a sample (which would obviously be best), they could have a sample product in about 2 weeks, and production in about 6 weeks.
Has anybody ever taken a poll to see how many people need these? I told him there are probably 4 or 5 thousand of these cars, and probably at least half of them need new seals. I then told him I was confident there would be at least 100 owners at LEC that would want at least one set. Do you think I was close? I personally will probably get an extra set if this works out.
I'm dying for a new set of proper seals all around. Factory replacement parts that last few months will simply make me feel more stupid than what I already am. And how much they charge for those pieces of ... not so good engineering again?
