To my friends - the Seville fans:
Today I would like to write especially to you. At a time when one´s feelings and emotions affect the daily routine, it makes it difficult to know exactly which path to choose. For me, Seville FC represents the most important period of my life, personally and professionally. What I have gained from the fans, directors and players is immeasurable – impossible to describe in words. I will be eternally grateful.
That´s why my decision to leave the Spanish team is the hardest I´ve ever had to make as a professional. I´ve always worked hard, and have never had an easy or simple career. It all started when I was forced to retire as a footballer as a result of an injury at too early an age. At that time I learnt that sacrifice can help you mature. Every step I´ve taken has always involved a great effort. I´ve had the pleasure of working at every level: youth, third, second B, second A and first divisions.
After an excellent winning streak for Seville FC, fate has presented me with the most ambitious challenge I have ever received at a professional level. But what about Seville FC? For me, Seville FC represents much more than just a team to be managed. My personal and professional life is very much tied up to this happy and sensitive city. I have to think about my family, who have suffered as a result of my profession, which is short-lived and unreliable, being dependent on results. In the same way that a manager can lose his job because of bad results, it has also been known for a manager to receive an irresistible job offer halfway through the season. This is precisely what has happened to me, not in June, but in October.
The passion in you may not allow you to understand my feelings and my decision, and some of you may even be angry with me, but sometimes an opportunity comes along in life that you just can´t turn down. There are trains that don´t come by again, or ones that don´t even stop at the right station. And today, my friends, I can assure you that in this case, after nearly 20 years in this job it would be unforgiveable not to accept a move which offers me the chance to grow beyond my wildest dreams – me, a modest person already in my fifties. It´s the culmination of a lot of hard work, as well as personal sacrifice and that of those around me.
Seville FC is much bigger than any one manager or player. The graciousness of their fans is something innate. It´s impossible to imagine the passion and devotion unless you´re a part of it. That is why I´m convinced that the professionalism and honesty of all the members of century-old club will make the best of this situation by steadying the course of a season that has got off to a dubious start. I was only a cog in the wheel of an organization which functions exceptionally well, and which will achieve great things once again this season.
The professionals there are extraordinary people who have great prospects for the future. Seville FC is going to be even bigger after my departure. This is my most sincere wish, because as a professional you can enjoy or suffer in your job, but as a person you feel it, with heartfelt passion. My heart will stay in Seville, but for the sake of my family and my profession, it´s impossible not to go to London. To my red and white family at the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium, I just want to say to you, that although I´m far away I can assure you that no one person could feel closer to you."
