Neil,

I'll have a buzzer module for you tomorrow. Anyone else while I'm at it?

Gary,

If you've got to ask you obviously can't afford it! :smt044

Neil/Geoff,
I tried straight swapping a GM 90 464 777 buzzer today (from my Astra) and it didn't work.

I've got a GM parts CD, took a look today. The 2no buzzer part numbers are listed for lots of various models, but the confusing thing is that some models also list a warning buzzer relay and some dont! :?

So, unless the GM 90 240 664 buzzer unit works as a straight swap, there must also be a relay unit hidden away somewhere in the Elan dash.

Cheers, Paul

Well 90 240 664 works on my S2! I can't see why it won't work on an SE because the relay connection has everything it could possibly need: fused 12V, switched 12V, chassis, switch input and interior lamp connection. :smt017

I'm going to get one anyway - I'll see if I can try it out first (Paul or Dave) and if it doesn't work, I'll keep it as a spare. If it does work then I'll send it on to you Neil. If there's a rush, I've found an online supplier who charges £7 + £1.50 P&P but he only has two left.

Geoff

Oh. Top tip: If you've got a manual with horrible orange graffiti on it, click the select tool in Acobat at the top left hand side of the page and copy the image into another application - lo and behold, no extraneous text! :-D

Shame you haven't got an 'r' key - what's Acobat?

:offtopic: but what the hell. Another interesting statement on the Carlton site....

"The VW/Audi group wash wipe relay contains some electronics to allow a variable intermittent wiper delay for the windscreen wipers. Times from 1/2 a second to more than 30 seconds can be set. You first select intermittent wipe, then switch it off, select intermittent again to set the time delay! Best of all the relay is a drop in replacement, just remove the current one and drop in the VW one. Get one from your nearest VW garage, part number 357 955 531."

I built one for my Anglia in 197? and it was the dog's doodahs as wipes were either on or off in those days.

Well, a bit of a day of mixed fortunes as far as my visit to the local scrappy went.

I managed to get a lights-on warning buzzer out of an Astra. The number on it was 90 240 665. But it didn't work. I suspect that the S2's had that part of the wiring loom (into the relay box) redesigned. Do S2's even HAVE a courtesy light delay? I'll have to study the wiring diagrams.

Quite a bit more progress on the variable delay wipers though. It turns out that the wiper stalk from a Vauxhall Omega is a straight swap. It has the potentiometer built into it, plus a couple of buttons labelled "R" and "S". I presume these are for "Resume" and "Set" on Cruise Control equipped cars. Not sure what to do with those yet.

All of the electrical connections and mounting lugs that attach the stalk to the steering column are exactly the same, as I hope you can see from the following pics. However there are 5 extra wires that bypass the main wiring and terminate in a small multiplug. These run down the centre of the stalk, and contribute (along with the extra buttons and potentiometer) to it being about twice as thick as the original. It's pretty chunky, but I guess it will be easy to get used to.

The only thing is, with the extra wiring being completely separate to the original, the extra buttons won't actually do anything until I find a way of splicing them into the Intermittent Wipe Unit. I think the system probably uses the time it takes for a capacitor to discharge to control the delay. So if I can find the place to incorporate the variable resistor into the circuit, then we're sorted. It may even be that later versions of the relay have that an an input already.

So it will be another trip to the scrappy tomorrow.
Meanwhile at least it looks pretty good! 8)

Neil,

I gave my buzzer to Phil to try (although he's moving house this weekend so I don't know when he'll get around to it).

The S2 doesn't have an interior delay and I can't see any reason for them modding the wiring loom for such a small modification - as I said, all re requisite connections are in the socket.

Good luck with the stalk (but it is BIG isn't it). The advantage of the VW unit is that you don't need to replace the stalk; the module delay is set by the time difference between selecting the intermittent wipe. I don't suppose you found one?

BTW, the Vauxhall man says the wiper stalks are pretty reliable and he has plenty of second hand ones. The other stalk can be prone to failure but he has quite a few new ones for £20.

Geoff,

I'm not sure if we'll have any S2's along to the IoM trip - we might be able to try a bit of a mix & match session.

Now that you describe the VW unit that way I understand better. It sounds pretty good. Don't suppose it mentioned which vehicles/ages to look on did it? I ran out of time yesterday and so wasn't able to find any, but don't mind popping back for another rummage.

Neil,

I've started a new thread for each of these in the Projects section:

Headlight buzzer and intermittent delay

Don't want to end up off topic, do we?
