Exhaust system

Postby JPGuillon » Tue 20.11.2007, 19:43

I exchanged the stock back box which was dead for two Sport Double S unit in a row that rattled after a few thousand kilometers . Then I have fitted a PECO system which I find far too noisy for me. This really spoil the drive.I have tried to contact Dave Jones at PECO by fax and PM to buy a second silencer kit like Monty have , with no result so far. Should I go back to a new stock system with an Everest chip or should I get a Quicksilver system . Are the Quicksilver sytems good ? Thank you to give me advices.
Jean Paul.

Exhaust System

Postby algirdas » Wed 21.11.2007, 07:37

Dear Jean Paul:

This PECO exhaust situation has me scratching my head. I find the PECO to be so very quiet, I do not know what to make of it. I'm wondering if I was given a defective PECO. Before that I had the stock exhaust system with a plain Jane Walker muffler. It was louder than the PECO but not uncomfortably so.

Sincerely,

Algirdas

Are Elan exhausts readily available at normal exhaust outlets or is it always a matter of ordering them special?

I think the bottom line is that everyone is different. There is a young lad in our office who is terribly affected by the cooling fans outside our window. To me, they're just a dull drone that gets a bit wearing, but they can make him feel physically sick if the windows are open!

Tell us Geoff, why do you leave your cooling fans on :P surely the little electric pump should be enough after a leisurely drive to work!

Perhaps its heavy traffic Smiffy's caught up in on his way in to his leisurely day at the office. Or he's got a potential overheating problem with his engine ? What about a paperclip test with one of those BAE plastic coated paperclips?

Jean Paul, Montys exhaust is still loud, even with the 2nd silencer. It doesn't seem to make a lot of difference.

Cooling fans = Air con = Windows should stay shut.

Correct.

Wrong. The air con never reaches us because it's working its arse off cooling down the heat given off by the vending machines keeping the Mars bars and crisps cold.

Exhaust system

Postby JPGuillon » Fri 23.11.2007, 12:20

Thanks to every one for the replies.
I bought it throught CYBOX as I was not aware of the LEC group buy. I have covered about 2500 kms with it and I did not notice a real change of the noise level. I think my system is particularly noisy just the opposite of Algirdas system . Large production variations? I was hoping that the second silencer would be the answer , but Dico says it does not make much difference. Thanks Gareth and Geoff for your offer but is it necessary to contact PECO again if the second silencer brings very little improvement ? I am used to racing engine noise level and I like it but this one is really tiring . By the way, I do not have the screech just a sort of whisle.

Jean Paul.

My Peco system is very loud I nearly didnt get onto the track at Oulton Park the other weekend as it was over 104dbs Oh........ this is 6+dbs over my M3 tuned sports exhaust...... car goes really well but on long journeys the noise is tiresome

Montys was tested at 95 at Oulton, so slightly less with the 2nd silencer.
But as already has been said, each one will probably vary.

Pico Dave told me recently that he is going to design a quieter version in the next month or so...he said it won't detract on the performance!!!!

Makes me think why it was not quiet in the first place!!! Hmm!

Supprised at that Martin  what rev`s were you tested at :? I ask this as IIRC there was another with a Peco system and passed no problems. Come to think of it there was someone with a screetcher at Bedford and they are strict on the noise level.

As Dico said think mine was the 95 db`s

The quicksilver is recommended by Pat Thomas of Kelvedon Motors as it has the standard exhaust size of 2 1/4 inch so there is no boost creep. As I remember it retailed for about £300 or 450 euros. The noise level should be the same as the original.

See also TomE data. Dermot, the standard exhaust is only 2" diameter.
