Bonnet gas struts

Has anyone any experiance with fitting gas struts to an elan bonnet?

I can't find a kit specifically for the elan but I'm sure one for another car can be bodged in (P106 perhaps). The cheap ones I've seen seam to fit with dodgy self tapping screws which will not work too well on the GRP bonnet.

Any views experiance welcomed

I've been looking at this for some time now. The problem is not only limited to the bonnet but also the lower mounting position (for me it must bolt on to existing fittings, don't fancy stressing / messing up the inner wing) and where they 'park' when closed.
Not easy to package if you want to retain full opening.

I've thought about this too but probably not as much as you have Dave. I was thinking the biggest issue was where they'd be stowed once the hood/bonnet was down. Doesn't seem to be much room for them unless they are offset quite a bit so they stick into the engine bay more.

I guess you couldn't really get away with using 1 because it would put a twist into the bonnet, and 2 are going to be heavier than the strut. So it sounds like a lot of effort for very little improvement in convenience.
