crunchy 3rd gear

Believe I have a deteriorating 3rd gear synchro. Which is really annoying since the rest of the gear box shifts beautifully and there isn't the slightest whinning in it. Anyone had issues with 3rd gear in particular? Maybe my bad luck.

Wondering whether I should look at replacing the synchro, or whether to find a rebuilt box. I assume it is from an Impulse. The good news in this is that I am approaching new clutch time anyway. Obviously, I am rationalizing real hard about this.

Anyone know of anyone in the Bay Area that has worked on these transmissions?

well from what you are saying I would tell you IF it is the problem, that either fix requires the same labor to remove and replace the gearbox from the car. I would bet you would have more luck finding a good tranny shop to rebuild your current box then to "get lucky" and find an Isuzu box that is in better shape.

wasn't it candles who rebuilt his own tranny? if so I'm sure he can give you some advice about the synchros.

I also have (did have) a bad 3rd synchro but I just had both drive shafts out and so did a gearbox oil change, I put back in Red Line 75-90 gear oil fully synthetic. It was only as the last drops were draining into the gearbox that I read the info on back, and found it said not suitable for manual gearboxes (diff oil) due to the very slippery nature and synchro's would have trouble meshing. Anyway the gearbox is the best it has ever been and I have not had a synchro crash since not even 3rd.

So could be a much less costly and easier task than a box change

hi i have got the third gear 'crunch' & i'm glad it's not just my car !
I think over zealous third gear acceleration from pervious owners have done the damage (which of course i don't do - much), i did find changing the oil has helped (miller TRX 80W90) but i can still feel it at times, mainly changing down

The Isle of man claimed my 3rd gear syncro so now my 3rd is a tad crunchy as well. I find a good blip of throttle on downshifts helps immensly but is tricky to judge. I will have to bite the bullet and fix it soon but while its all in bits it would be sensible to fit an uprated clutch and a LSD wouldn't it .

I have a good friend who works for a firm who specialse in re-building Jap import engines I'm sure he will know someone who can fix a Isuzu gearbox I will make some enquiries.

Joe, unless you do lots of track days I would be wary of fitting an uprated clutch, or be careful with which one you choose.
Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't have fitted mine. Too severe for general driving. I can cope with it, but only just. Perhaps if the box comes out at some time in the future I may swap it for a stock replacement.
I don't even know which one I have though its a 6 puck, it was part of a group buy a few years back. The stock one should be good for 200bhp plus. Monty has done 8 or 9 track days on his original 70 thou miler clutch, with no probs (yet ).
One of the US lads has an uprated clutch which he is happy with. DaveM?

Same problem here, 1st is ok, going into 2nd, ok, 2nd to 3rd.. not good..

Said, if the car sits still for a week or so in this weather

its possible the cables could freeze a little.. which could cause gear trouble

Johnny, thats what Dave Eds got quoted at A1 gearbox, but i think thats + vat, & of course thats after you've got the gearbox out, which if you don't do it yourself, will probably be another £500.

£375 + VAT = £440 but that was 18 months ago. And that was just to open it up and look - the synchros were on top of that once assessed
